Idea for Ships...

Suddenly I just had this thought. If it's possible for units to get on walls, is it possible to make the walls move? Using that same idea we could possibly get units to actually walk on the decks of ships, firing at the other ship with actual archers running on deck and transporting them that way. Transports could be of larger ship size while Frigates have enough room to put one or two hordes of archers.

Just a fun little idea.

Can archers fire at enemy ships or just other units (whether onboard a ship or land)? Nonetheless, I don't think there will be any resistance to such a marvelous idea.

Me and Ed tried it a while ago. It's possible, but its a huge amount of work to implement it for all the ships ingame and code all archer units to be able to garrison...

That said, it would be really awesome, so if Rob likes the idea it might happen :p

It would have to be just 1 archer horde per ship though, isn't room for 2.

I don't know what you mean by coding all the archers. I meant putting an invisible elevator or some elevator so units can get on the ship like they do with BFME 1 walls. The only problem is it eliminates the need for a transport ship since the frigate can already carry troops like that, I guess it could provide a whole new world to naval warfare, like adding upgrades to increase damage done by archers in the ship via a leadership like aura. Could be alot of fun.

Why was it hard shikari? Just copy like a haradhrim or lorien tower's code and remove the starting horde and tower autofire...

that is easily one of the most epic ideas yet! me likey!
it would probably need to take a backseat to some of the more pressing projects but that would be a great little addition to the atmosphere of the mod. :unsure:

and we could still keep transport ships to move around units other than archers. they gotta get around too :xcahik_:

Perhaps increase the load in the Transports then to compensate? Still make them useful...

I love the idea too, but there is the little part in the VERY back of my mind that is sceaming: "WORST IDEA IN THE WORLD!". Don't know why it is saying that, I guess I will have to look into my mind to understand... I'll tell you why when I get back.

It's hard for the simple reason that you would have to make some passenger bone additions to the SKL and then check to see if it fits with existing animations. We did make two ships a while back with that ability but I never got around to it. I think with stationary objects it's easier like the elevator and wall because the ability to walk on them is due to exportation of a plane and some coding but as far as I know there is some rules as to doing that as well cos I could never get it to work although I was told how to - think you can only have one plane on the model for the guys to walk on or something. So the way we did it was to add passenger bones and code the models in one by one... I'll give the coding a try later and get back to you guys although I can't see any reason why it wouldn't work, just tedious really.

Hmm, well why not just make it so that ships have archers attached like mumakil?

This idea is made of awesome and should not be dropped. If archers could fire at each other from the decks of their ships, it would almost add a whole new layer of strategy to the naval aspect of the game, which is pretty lacking.
You'd need to implement some sort of Corsair Archer, though...

this is something we've been looking into for a while and the idea is far from dropped. Rob had spoke of garrisoning live units a long time ago but until he gets back we have no way on experimenting with it - seeing as he's the coder and we're just the artists.

This would most definatley add a new layer to the game...You make an interesting point in your post, but If I were to explain here would be off topic...
