Here´s a news article that i translated. Its from the local newspaper "The Nation", and its from last tuesday. Ill post two more of this soon.

Cuba added more support against USA´s Embargo

A record number of 179 countries condemned the blocking

Only three nations opposed to this generalized thought, and there were two abstentions. The representants of Bush and Castro´s government exchanged serious expressions in the General Council.

New York - Fidel Castro´s Government achieved yesterday a defined diplomatic
triumph in the General Council of the United Nations, where 179 countries, a record number, voted for a condemnation resolution on the economical, financial and commercial Embargo USA holds on Cuba.

Although its a traditional voting in the UN, the conflict continues to feed the passions of Washington and La Habana, whose representants fought verbally in the recint of the Council.

From the 191 members of UN, 184 were present, and only three, Israel (Arg´s note: Surprise, surprise...), Marshall Islands and USA voted against the document, while Morocco and Micronesia abstained from voting.

This way, and even if this year the internal repression wave had increased in the island, Cuba demonstrated the success of its extensive diplomatic efforts to convince a great quantity of countries of voting and supporting their cause. Last year, 173 votes had been in favour of the resolution, facing the same three oppositions (Arg´s Note: surprise, surprise again...) and four abstentions

The Americans however, didnt let themselves silent. "The best day of Cuba, will be when the Cubans have finished with the malefic dictatorial regime of Castro, and tell to him, Hasta la Vista, Baby", exact words of what the USA representant, Sichan Siv suprisingly declared

(Args Note: For Gods sake, thats called diplomacy, or is it just me and that is a totally absurd, low, vague, unthought, irrational, discriminative, burde and unrespectful comment? How can such a person be a diplomatic??)

Indigned by the insult, the Cuban Chancellor, Felipe Pérez Roque, underlined that "never in this Council so unrespectful words had been pronounced", and said as well "Its the Cubans with the support of the international community, the one who will say, hasta la vista blockhade, hasta la vista genocide"

Even with the overwhelming support of the international community, that has been asking for the end of the American sanction towards the island for 12 years, the voting has no practical effects, as unlike the Security Council, the resolutions of this UN Camera are non-vinculating.

The document tells USA to end the Embargo that affects Cuba since 1960, after the revolution led by Castro, took out the dictatorial and pro-american government of Fulgencio Batista. Besides, it asks the international community not to obey they American legislation that reinforces the blockhade, and that oversees punitive measures against third countries that trade with Cuba. The resolutions asks as well that the UN secretary, Kofi Annan, prepares a report on the effects of the embargo upon the population of the caribbean island.

Taking maximum benefitfrom the event, Castro had made a giant screen to be installed in the Karl Marx theatre, so 5000 Cubans followed the voting live.

"It should show taht they (Americans) go in a direction, and the world goes in an opposite one" , the euforic declaration from the president of the Cuban Parliament, Ricardo Alarcón. "Washington couldnt attract one single vote to its position, while Cuba advanced and added almost the total of the members" he added.

Bush´s Veto

In the Council, the Cuban Chancellor explained that the blocking towards his country is a genocide crime according to the Ginebra (Geneva as Americans call it often) convention of 1948). And he assured that its the biggest obstacle for the economical and social development of Cuba.

"Just a corrupt and ambicious minority, which hasnt doubted on organising and executing terrorist actions against our people is interested on the blockhade to go on", Perez Roque said, clearly referring to the exilees in Miami. "President Bush is a hostage of the interests of this minority. He ows them the presidence he achieved controversially in 2000", he added

The resolution comes in times, in which inside the own northamerican administrations, there are doubts regarding the efficience of the blockhade (Args Note: Venezuela actually trades with Cuba deliberatedly, so there.). The last October 24th, the Senate approved the restrictions on travelling to Cuba, supporting an almost identical votation in the Representants Camera. However President Bush had already warned he´d veto anything related to lifting the restriction up.

Yesterday, Sychan Siv, remembered USA offered to lighten the embargo, in exchange to a political opening of the regime, which in the last years has hardened the repression against the internal disidence.

*End*

Say your opinion within.

I do think Cuba should open itself to a democracy, but story has showed than a dictatorsip, or a totalitarist regime NEEDS to take such actions as restricting the opposition to consolidate themselves. In fact, many dictatorships had the plan to reestablish democracy when the country had gotten out of chaos. Now what i ask myself, is how is Cuba gonna get the chance to do that, if its development is halted by a country who doesnt have the authority to do so (as no other should)?

Examples of Dictatorships or Military governments that would instaure a democracy?
Primo de Rivera, Spain, 1923-1930
Jose Ramirez, Argentina, 1945-47
Uriburu - Agustín Justo, Argentina 1930-41
Onganía, Argentina 1966-70
A remote chance of, Francisco Franco, 1939-1972, Spain

And many others.

Margret Thatcher - Fenring's the one for me
