If someone requests something from you're site and it's missing the person with auto goto 404.shtml
It would be wise that everyone made a 404.shtml files that either re-directs to a real page or has a link to a real page.
The server also asks for favicon.ico alot. This is the icon which is shown next to you're site in someones favorates list.
It also wants a robots.txt, but i don't know what that is.
All these files go in you're root/main folder.

maybe robots are those googlebots and teh other bots....

Yeah, robots.txt can control which bots can see what pages i think
