After the first defeats in North Africa, Fiat/Ansaldo developed a new 16 tons tank project, able to counter the British A13 Mk III, which have decimated Italian ground armored divisions. The "Celere Sahariano" was built, a vehicle with an extremely low profile, sloped armour, camouflageable, with great speed and efficient armament. The development of this tank was quite complicated and only the prototype was built. This was caused by internal indecisions between a national production or a production under German license. First embryo was a modified M14/41, with inclined armour plates and with a lower, wider (without machine gun) turret. The "official" prototype adopted "Christie" suspensions and conveyors (already tested by Ansaldo on some soviet BT5 captured during the Spain war), it mounted a gasoline engine able to produce 275 hp. A 75mm main gun was proposed for production models. A 47/40mm gun was used in the prototype. This tank outclassed every Italian and several Allied tanks produced during WWII due to its reduced weight and high performances.
