The Bothan spy unit is nothing more than a Rebel probe droid. Intelligence is key for GFFA, as Ghost mentioned, and the Rebels would be lost without such a unit.

What about limitations of such intel? Will probes/bothans be able to see everything? Everything except hidden bases planets? Only land/space?

Finally, what about other intel units (i.e. heroes)? In PR 1.0 those seem a bit random - IIRC Solo could see everything, while Fey'lya only rough estimate. Obviously, I'm not demanding those units to be revised - I'm only asking for information :D

Heroes are an obvious choice - although some see more than others - but there is a problem. Some planets have hidden starbases due to asteroid fields/planet rings etc, and even Cronal (Blackhole) can't see there.
The heroes havn't changed much this release.

I have one other suggestion - just like the rebels had to do - near suicide scout missions. Send a couple of very cheap units as an advance force and fight the actual battle. Then you get to see what the outskirts of the battlefield is like, along with likely quantity of opponent (as seen on the mini-map). You will probably lose some of your ships - but it's the surest way of getting information.
Be prepared to lose all of them though as some planets carry interdictors in their defenses.

Mmm...they didn't really do this when they were "The Rebels" I don't think...this was more of a Black Fleet Crisis thing with dedicated (i.e. expensive) recon starfighters. They were shocked and appalled by the casualty rates that they sustained trying to figure out the Yevethan order of battle...I don't think that "suicide" scouting was normal for them...

They were appalled at the casualty rates because they were a government that has been watered down from necessity. They just didn't have the desperation that they did when they were the Rebellion.

When you don't have resources such as expensive recon fighters, you need to resort to other methods of reconnaissance. That may involve a Bothan spy...But in the case where you wouldn't have a Bothan on hand, you may need to send normal fighters in to do a recon mission, and not expect them to survive. We're not saying they didn't hope for survival. Just that they weren't betting on it.

Not every mission would be suicide. They might make it out alive.

That essentially comes down to how you choose to roleplay the faction.

Ah, roleplay :] Can't wait to mass-produce some TIE Fighters and Bombers :) And only 3 days to go (even 2 considering that I'm gonna get drunk tomorrow :p)
