I really want to start modding, but I don't have a clue how to do anything. So I would appreciate it if someone could point me in the right direction?

There are some very good tutorials that are for beginner BFME I modders by AdmiralGT about adding new factions. They are Adding a New Faction, New Faction Bases and .bse Files, New Faction Spellbooks and Spells.

I myself have a "newbie" tutorial called Adding a DualEconomyChoice upgrade to a Economy Plot.

The best thing for you to do is to go to the main 3rd Age website, click on Articles, scroll down to BY GAME, and select Battle for Middle-Earth. Consider any tutorial with one or two stars fair game.

And when you try these tutorials out, don't blindly follow them. Try to figure out the connections between different pieces of the game. :D

and after reading those ask if you need help.
Also experiment with different aspects of modding and find one that you like and really get to know.

To be honest, if you're really new to all of this, I would suggest you forget about trying to add a new faction and focus on something simple, like trying to give a hero a new leadership ability... if that works for you then progress onto something more challenging :D
Reassuringly Expensive...

Blade with whom I have lived,
Blade with whom I now die,
Serve right and justice one last time,
Seek one last heart of evil,
Still one last life of pain,
Cut well old friend, and then... farewell

yeah most start out modifying build costs and adding units to buildings.
Don't start out like I did and try to make a massive mod on your own with very little knowledge.
Unless of course you have the patience and determination to pull it off.
