Since my computer couldn't handle the GFFA campaign so I decided that eventualy I'd get a laptop with the right specs I've heard that Empire at war foces of corruption has problems on vista and that's what they all seem to run, so would the game still be playabel on Vista?

Thanks

sorry that this is off topic.

I play just fine on Vista. As I understand it, it's the original release of EaW that doesn't work.

Is it possible that the excessive lag might be related to Vista? I'm pretty sure Ghost and I both have XP.

It certainly shouldn't be. At least, not to that extant. Besides, I'd expect that several of the others here on the forums have XP as well.

If my old hard drive worked still, I'd boot it up and check the difference...

For future reference, what are yours and Ghost's specs?

Could be onto something there PR...I for one have Vista. I don't think I'm running FoC in compatability mode either. Maybe I'll try that, and running as administrator as well.

EDIT: It looks like there was a bit of a performance increase, but that could have also been from the system restart. Though it does look like changing the compatibility and/or running as administrator messed with my save games...

I'm using Vista Ultimate 64 and I have no problem with running FOC or other mods. It's the sheer number of units that kill the gaming experience. Even the core worlds GC is unplayable due to lag and I do have 4 GB of RAM.

Now I have XP, and I have different loading times than you all, despite my less than average specs. Only 3 gig of usable RAM, 2.4 ghz processor, and yet the mod loades in around 3 or less minutes, and GFFA was under 7 last I checked; that was before 1.1.1. I don't really understand, maybe my standards are lower, but all of the campaigns were playable. Laggy, but playable.

With a 3.0Ghz Core 3 Duo and 4GB RAM, Inner Rim is playable. Extremely slower than normal and a bit jerky, but once I smash a few pirate and AI fleets, it speeds back up.
I haven't tried Core Worlds, but I expect it to be the same way.
Outer Rim and the GFFAs are simply unplayably laggy for me.

The mod itself actually loads in under a minute, although I haven't bothered timing GFFA.

For future reference, what are yours and Ghost's specs?

I have two PCs running PR and I try to test on both:

"New"
Intel Core 2 Duo 3.0 GHz 1333 MHz FSB (3.0 GHz per core)
2 x Radeon HD 3870 512 MB GDDR3 in CrossFire
2 x 2 GB DDR2
Windows XP Pro SP2
Loads menu in about 2 minutes.

"Old"
AMD Athlon 64 3000+ 2.0 GHz 800 MHz FSB
GeForce 6600GT 128 MB GDDR3
1 GB DDR 400
Windows XP Pro SP2
Loads menu in about 5 minutes.

Gold Pack fixes nothing.

As I understand it. Its a memory allocation problem that will be caused by any system having more memory than FOC knows what to do with.
FOC starts, test memory and crashes right away.

XP doest use any memory over 3G so no problem here.
Some versions of Vista do allow for more memory usage...too much memory for FoC. (Assuming you have the memory installed)
Strangely enough regular EAW doesnt appear to have a problem?

Oh wait. Now I remember exactly what I saw. I heard there was a problem running original EaW on Vista 64-bit. It did say that the Gold Pack and FoC worked fine. No mention about the RAM though.

So If I bought the Gold Pack and played that Version Of EaW and Forces of Courruption on Vista it'll work.

It should according to what I read. Do you have 32-bit or 64-bit Vista?

I'll be getting a 64-bit Vista or should I get a 32-bit, what one will work best.
The reason I satrted this topic before I get a laptop is so when I get a chance to buy one I know more of what I need

Thanks

Im using Vista 64bit with 4G RAM and the FOC patch and everything works fine

PS. If you decide to get Vista 64 make sure you also have dual or quad core CPU. Vista just runs better with those.
