hello.

I have been attempting to edit my lotr.str file for a mod that I am working on.

At first I copied EnglishPatch105.big and renamed the cop to EnlgishPatch106.big. I then edited the str in said big file, and saved it. When I loaded the game the change did not take place.

So then I tried editing the same text in EnglishPatch105.big file. That change did not take place. I tried renaming the text in the original English.big, still the changes did not take. I can't really think of what I am doing wrong.

I save all the new str files as data\lotr.str like it should be.

Then change I am making is simply

INI:FactionMen
"Good"
END

Which is a pretty straightforward change. I am kind of lost here. I have successfully edited text before, about 6 months ago.

You should add it in another big file named _MyMod or something with _ this way the game will 'overwrite' the latest lotr.str

ok I named it to _heromod.big.

That did not work.

I am trying to change the names of the factions when you select them for skirmish. Am I possibly modifying the wrong line?

That is the correct line...
So in your big file it is in:
data\lotr.str?
Try naming it with 2 __ 's ;)

Ya I tried 2 of them as well.

This is really weird as I have done this before and it worked.

I am really confused.

I am going to try removing them all and see what happens.

EDIT:

I started from scratch and it works now.

Though it does not work with any custom name, with or without the underscore.

I had to name it englishpatch106.big for it to be read. I had already tried that, but I must have done something different.

As soon as I name it so _customname.big, it is not recognized. Anyways it seems the problem is solved. Thanks for your help.

I am also having dramas, my altered lotr.str does not affect in game.

I have tried the above, creating new big files and renaming, renaming my modified lotr.str file, but nothing is taking affect....

My language folder originally had English, EnglishAudio, englishpatch201

I've tried creating a new one, and naming it a higher patch than the above, and also tried starting it off with _ or a 2, but nothing has worked.

...and what is the correct place?

I've been saving my modified lotr.str file back in the same place where I first got it, along with all this other locations trying to figure it out myself :-(

It's going in data\lotr.str in your custom .big file that has to be read last by the game to make sure it is not overwritten by any other file containing lotr.str. Read this topic from the beginning, it should give you enough tips what to do. If you struggle we will help :)

"To know what question we may reasonably propose is in itself a strong evidence of sagacity or intelligence. For if a question be in itself incongruous and begs for uncalled-for answers, it holds, sometimes, besides embarrassing the proposer, the disadvantage to seduce the unguarded listener into giving absurd answers, and we are presented with the ridiculous spectacle of one (as the ancients said) milking the he-goat, and the other holding a sieve beneath."
