After getting mixed reports on what is and isn't lag - high-end systems that experience lag and low-end systems that don't - I think it's critical to define this "lag" in order for us to fix it. How do you define lag? Well, with numbers of course.

I'd like everyone who's willing to participate to download FRAPS and find some kind of a timer that can measure seconds. From a fresh boot/restart, load FRAPS and minimize it, then prepare to launch an unmodified copy of PR v1.1 (also make sure there's nothing in the Scripts or XML folders under Empire at War Forces of Corruption\Data\ and close any unnecessary background/tray applications that may launch with Windows). Get ready to record the following tests:

  • Menu load time - this is the time from when you first double-click the PR icon to when the space battle first appears. Once it loads, go to Options>Video>Advanced, hit the Auto Detect button, and hit the Accept button. Again for the standard settings, hit the Auto Detect button, hit Apply, and hit Yes. This will scale the graphics settings according to your machine. Write down the resolution and hit Accept.
  • Core Worlds load time - go to Single Player>Galactic Conquest, click Core Worlds, and select Galactic Empire as the faction. Leave the other settings alone. This is the time from when you press the Start button to when the campaign dialog pops up.
  • Core Worlds frame rate - the view should be centered on Coruscant to start with - don't pan it. Record the frame rate that FRAPS is showing in the top left corner of the screen while running the game in normal time. Exit to the menu.
  • Menu battle frame rate - I put this last so you got a chance to reset your graphics settings without worrying about the outcome of the battle (in which the Empire won't respawn for some reason). The frame rate will vary based on what the camera is focusing on, so you'll need to watch it for a while and record both the low and high marks. These should occur at a really wide shot and a really tight shot respectively for everyone. Stop once the Empire starts losing destroyers.
Now come back to this thread and report your findings and system specs and answer a short survey (also, try not to use this thread for extraneous comments). Please use this format:

  • CPU - including the manufacturer, model (if possible), number of cores, clock speed per core, L2 cache size (if possible), and FSB speed (if possible). If it's overclocked, use the speed it runs at.
  • Mobo. - including FSB speed (if possible).
  • GPU - including the manufacturer, model, amount of graphics memory, and type of memory (if possible).
  • RAM - including the total amount and type of memory (if possible).
  • OS - including the brand and version.
  • Res. - this is the resolution and refresh rate the game ran at when you did Auto Detect. Please also indicate if this is native for your monitor.
  • Menu load time
  • Core Worlds load time
  • Core Worlds frame rate
  • Menu battle frame rate
  • Load time rating - your assessment of the load times on a scale of 1 to 5, where 1 is awful and 5 is excellent.
  • Tactical mode rating - your assessment of the performance only of tactical mode on a scale of 1 to 5, where 1 is awful and 5 is excellent.
  • Galactic mode rating - your assessment of the performance only of galactic mode on a scale of 1 to 5, where 1 is awful and 5 is excellent.
Thanks for your assistance in improving the performance of PR!

I've run this through four times now, so I have four sets of numbers:

First set is the auto-detect settings on a normal boot-up. (The ones I'd use to compare.)
Second is my settings on a normal boot-up. (Since auto-detect is so radically different from what I use.)
Third is my settings on an optimized boot-up. (Aggressively disabling all services and processes I could.)
Fourth is auto-detect on the optimized boot-up. (Lol parantheses.)

Specs:
  • CPU - Intel Core 2 Duo 3.0 GHz (Two Cores at 3.0 GHz, 6MB L2 Cache, 1333FSB)
  • GPU - nVidia GeForce 8800 GT 512MB
  • RAM - 4x1GB Dual Channel DDR2 SDRAM at 800MHz
  • HDD - 7200RPM, SATA 3.0Gb/s, 16MB Cache
  • OS - Windows Vista Home Premium 32-bit SP1
  • Vid. Settings - Auto-detect: 1280x1024 at 60 Hz, AA at second lowest level, Detail Level Max, VSync Off
  • Vid. Settings - My settings: 1680x1050 at 60 Hz, AA at highest, Detail Level Max, VSync On
  • Motherboard - Supports FSB 1333 with Intel X38 Chipset
  • Menu loading time - 0:31, 0:30, 0:29, 0:27
  • Core Worlds load time - 1:08, 1:16, 1:07, 1:06
  • Core Worlds frame rate - 8-10, 9, 9-10, 8-10
  • Menu battle frame rate - 25-250, 25-63, 25-61, 29-300
  • Load time rating - 5
  • Tactical mode rating - 5
  • Galactic mode rating - 2.5

CPU: IntelĀ® Core™2 Duo CPU 8600 @ 2.40GHz (2 CPUs)
L2 Cache: 3MB 1066MT/s
Page File: ~5GB usable
GPU: Intel GMA 4500 MHD (up to 384MB) (dxdiag says up to 1GB)
RAM: 4GB DDR3 (2x 2GB)
OS: Windows XP Professional (5.1, Build 2600) Service Pack 3 32bit
RES: 1024x768 @60Hz but switching to 1280x800 gave better framerate

Menu Load Time: 1 minute 32 seconds
Movie FPS: 10-75fps
Core World Load Time: 1 minute 32 seconds
Core World FPS: 7-9fps

Load Time Rating: 5
Tactical Mode Rating: 4.5 (my own comp's limitations)
Galactic Mode Rating: 3 (runs the same way 1.0 did on my old comp, so I can't complain)

The game is only slightly modded; the space cap was raised to 150, another XML was created but not referenced anywhere, so it shouldn't be loaded, and one comment was placed in one other file.

-Motherboard: 1333 FSB, I believe.
-GPU: NVIDIA 8800GTS 320MB

-OS: Windows XP Professional SP3 32-bit Version 2002
-Resolution: 1440 x 900 @ 60 Hz. Close to native, I run it at 75Hz normally.

-Menu Load Time: 0:52
-Core Worlds Load Time: 1:25
-Core Worlds FPS: 8
-Main Menu Battle FPS: 20-175

-Load Rating: 5
-Tactical Rating: 5
-Galactic Rating: 2 (I know it's harsh, but it's unplayable for my tastes, although Shadow Hand and Thrawn Campaign are fine.)

  • GPU - Mobile Intel 965 Express (384 MB graphics memory, GPU processor 2493 MHz)
  • RAM - 3 GB *looks* like 667 MHz memory modules

Here is my system:

GPU: Sapphire Radeon HD 3850 512MB GDDR3, @ 715MHz GPU Clock & 846MHz Memory Clock
CPU: IntelĀ® Core™ i7 920 2.67GHz (8 CPUs) (D0), @ 3.4GHz (1,088Vcore)
RAM: OCZ Gold XTC 6134MB RAM DDR3 at 1360MHz 7-7-7-20
HDD: Western Digital Caviar Black 500GB (32MB Cache multi threaded)
Mobo: Asus P6T SE
OS: Microsoft Windows Vista Ultimate 64-bit (Many features disabled for perfect stability)
Resolution: 1280x1024

In core worlds I get an average of 45FPS.
Main Menu Battle Screen I get an average of 166FPS.
Desktop to the Main Menu takes 26 seconds.
Main Menu to Core Worlds takes 11 seconds.

I might upgrade to RAID 0 with the WD Caviar Black in the near future so the times will be outdated and I will try it again :p

I havent played this mod for a while, and when i first tryed it i thought it wasnt working as it took so long to load. I should have read this thread first anyway heres my results.

This is with everything maxed out including AA, vsync is also on.

* CPU - phenom 2 940 @ 3.6ghz
* Mobo. - Asus M3N78 @ 200 fsb
* GPU - GTX 285 OCX
* RAM - 4Gb DDR 1066
* OS - Vista 64
* Res. - 1920 x 1200

1. Menu load time 32 seconds
2. Core Worlds load time 1 min 3 seconds
3. Core Worlds frame rate 9-11
4. Menu battle frame rate 30-60

1. Load time rating - 3
2. Tactical mode rating - 5
3. Galactic mode rating - 3

Hmm my in game fps does seem a little low tho. I just checked the auto detect and i dont think it works as it did 1280 x 1024 which is a joke for my card.

  • Tactical mode rating - 4
  • Galactic mode rating - 2(Playable but the slowness is pain in the arse. And with ships normally taking up to 10 mins to build, the game performance is very low. IMHO performance should be improved if possible before adding any more neutral ships etc in to game.) (On a side note. Even GFFA lite is unplayable on my rig so i imagine normal version would blow up my computer.)
