Thats how I'm learning... I downloaded the PHP manual, it helps with my trial and error stuff... I'm trying to learn C++ at the same time, so hopefully they will both just click together...

the best way for me to learn PHP was to look at the way other scripts do their thing, then use the knowledge gained from that to make your own. To learn SQL with PHP i used Dreamweaver MX, which has a feature to automatically do it for you. All you need to do then is look at the code.

yeah i agree the best way is to look at how other Coders code their scripts sure you may not understand it at first but you get the genearal idea of what a script needs. Also maybe looking at books can help you aswell as they show the code and you can either download the script examples from an offical website if they have one or type it out yourself and see what each part does, beware typing it out could take hours just to do one file depending on the size of the script. the way i do it is Just have fun when your learning as if you pick something up else where why not experiment and go "Hey i wonder that this will do in the script i am doing" lol
The important thing is to be creative when your codeing but not easy for copycats to re do your coding
