JUST CURIOUS...I'm not a developer or anything...but would anyone be even remotely interested in a Star Wars Capital ship simulator? Think of a cross between X-Wing or TIE Figher and the Silent Hunter submarine sims (SH 3 or SH 4). One where you move about inside the ship either by mouse or by hotkey, going to different stations with a simulated crew?

I've often thought that such a game would be the last one I ever bought...but I fear that it would be too slow to interest most gamers. What do you folks think?

I'm sure I'd love it, provided there's not horrible unbalanced stuff or game-breaking bugs of course.
I've always preferred the intimidation of the capital ships to the speed of the snubfighters.

<DevXen> Today I was at the store and saw a Darth Vader action figure that said "Choking Hazard." It was great.

They were planning on doing just that with Jump to Lightspeed, allowing players to function as crew for starships (it was somehow tied to your faction standing/rank, so you couldn't just go out and buy one like normal). However, those features were quietly swept under the rug as it got closer to release, and all they eventually delivered on was starfighter and transport combat (months behind schedule at that).

I think it'd be great as a MMO, but you couldn't skimp on the ship roster if you did it. I'd imagine that if it were ever done officially, it'd be with an EaW-sized roster in a static galaxy and otherwise insufficient depth though.

I don't know about MMO, but multiplayer certainly. As for a lacking ship roster, that's where modders like you come into play. :p

I have always wanted a good Star Wars simulator like that, actually. But I'd like to have it where you can be anything from a fighter pilot to a fleet commander sort of thing (But still commanding from the bridge of a capital ship, not RTS style). A good way to do/force that would be to have the player start as a green fighter pilot, and have them rank up through missions, so they have to work for the job of Captain or Admiral.

An MMO would be awesome, but I'd also like it to have a single-player and a smaller multiplayer aspect. So you could play a small game with friends only or something like that.

That'd be great as long as you could refuse promotion. I'd love to just sit at fighter pilot the entire game.

That would be a likely option for my idea. But it would have repercussions, as the later battles would be major fleet operations, and might need a touch of tactics more than an expert fighter jock.

Maybe we could tie it into the next RTS, the one we hope PR makes.

An overcommander, like an RTS, giving orders to the troops. The troops, who don't get as much information, get bonuses for following order, but don't always have to, perhaps.
I know there is a game that did something like that, though I don't remember where.

I'd worry about finding enough people around in instanced rooms in order to actually do multiplayer. One ship could potentially require a few dozen crew, even if you simplified some things. For example, I'd assume you'd still want every gun to be manned individually, although I'd think it necessary to have some sort of basic (read: worse than Human) AI to control stations that couldn't be manned. A ship with a complete player crew ought to be pretty terrifying.

That'd be great as long as you could refuse promotion. I'd love to just sit at fighter pilot the entire game.

I'd assume the command structure wouldn't be so rigid in a game setting where it would be an issue. You could, however, do sort of a ladder to determine who gets what rank for a MMO, since you couldn't have everyone running around as a colonel like in SWG.

That would be pretty cool...

But only if it felt like real Stars Wars instead of something like the mess vanilla EaW gave us. =/

I'm not much optimist so I would fear it ends up to be semething like ST-Bridge Commander. (God helps it don't end up as ST legacy.)

But I'd like to have SW game resembling Space empires V, turnbase 4x strategy for galactic and realtime space/land battles (but without limited time for battle so you can enjoy crushing enemy presence).

SE IV had a Star Wars mod or two...supposedly. Did you ever try them?

It sounds similar to the idea of X3, where you can buy just about anything up to and including Carriers and Battleships whilst still being a spacesim game with an economy and the like.. ok so it would be a bit more advanced than X3 but other than being based in the SW universe it would be similar.
Anyone played X3 btw? (Otherwise no one will know what im on about!)

Ever play Sword of the Stars? Max limit is 10 minutes for a battle, however since in that 10 minutes multiple dreadnoughts as well as over 50 destroyers could end up being blown to beautiful smithereens. Not to mention there's a mod called ACM which pretty much rips original game a new one, kinda like what PR does for FoC. A total freakin' revamp, upgrade, and expansion.

SotS was okay at first, but after two expansions its gotten pretty gnarly in terms of balance, racial uniqueness, and kickass weaponry. Not to mention its real-time projectile tracking. So yes, your ships actually can move out of the way. Try hurling a Siege Driver at a Destroyer and watch him laugh as he moves out of the way. 100% accuracy does not guarantee a hit. Ships can move out of the way.

Sorry, no land battles. You are usually bombarding their planet at the same time you are destroying their fleet, so land battles aren't needed since all the defenders are dead.

Yes I have tried SotS, but the tech tree was to small compared to one you have in SE V (Master of orion). Well in SE V you have 5 min of battle time, but when I had Dreadnaughts my most advance DN could face up 50-60 AI's best ships and win, but it took too long to destroy all that ships so some get away with some damage due to time limit (BTW this is what technical superiority mean like trowing tanks agains pikemen in civilization series). Also I like SE V due to fact that it is so easily modable that even I can modify it.

I may try get my hands on expansions of SotS (would be nice if it was in sale in my country).
BTW I can't remember but is it possible in SotS to capture enemy ships and research enemy hardware?

Well, if you can't legally buy the expansions, there are various other ways to procure them, which I can't go into detail for legal reasons.

And yes, you can build ships with Boarding sections to board and take over their ships, and yes, you can steal their tech. Bring Repair & Salvage ships to the battle. You have a %chance to steal tech after each battle based on how many ships you blow up and how many R&S cruisers you have on-site. Capturing a ship gives a greater tech theft chance than a destroyed ship since chances are the tech inside is in much better condition. Also, researching the language of the race you are stealing from gives better salvage chances too since you can read the technical handbooks and stuff.

As for crappy techtree, grab ACM after you get AMoC and patch it to 1.6.4. Bigger tech tree, more weapons, re-worked humans with new, non-crappy models (their ships have almost 2x the HP of everyone else and have guns, guns, and more guns). Basically, the mod maker took each tree, split them up a few times, and made each new section as big as one of the original trees. And researching takes longer too.
