Often auto-update programs have not worked for me.
Having to download anything that is more than 20 MB more than once is a very bad setup.

To play online you have to have a new Steam ID. You can only get a Steam ID by downloading a whole new copy of HL.
I already have HL and a bunch of mods, but i'll have to re-download them through Steam to play them online. That would take 50 hours, as Steam does not have a resume my 56k can't do it.

OK, lemme explain the steam thing. it copies it from your drive (local) to your steam directory (local) thats all it does, theres no uploading or downloading from the steam servers. The only thing you have to d/l from the steam servers is updates and whatnot.so wait, steam isn't going to be required though is it?
Steam is not required YET. It will be when Hl2 is released because they are doing away with the WON Servers (the old way of multiplayer). I'm still not sure about how they are gonna go about releasing peoples mods via steam tho. Am gonna try to find out so that I know whats goin on later.
