Steam isnt great, but its good, give valve a few weeks and it will be better aside from the fact that users on dialup cant play jackshit anymore. I guess I'll live tho

that download you got has all the mods in it already (dont mind that) but its a big download. And to add mods, put them in the SteamApps/<your@email>/half-life/ folder. They will run... kinda.. you have to wait for updates (which probably wont happen on most mods, aside from the mainsteam ones)

All my 'working' mods are just in the SteamApps/<your@email>/ folder... cs, dod, etc. buy I should put 'non-mainstream' mods (even those that still get updated) in the half-life folder? Well, doesn't hurt to try =P thanks man

I don't have internet connection on my computer at home but I bought the original Half-Life 2 anyway because I was convinced that sooner or later they will crack that fuc*ing steam and I will play the game at last... and they cracked the game to work without steam and I finally could play so I was happy... until my friend gave a Dvd-r with mods he downloaded. I was in heaven. A pack of great SP mods was waiting to be played... and they still are... To play a mod FUC*ING steam is required. So I'm asking. Is there a way to play a mod without steam? Is there somekind of unofficial mod launcher for H-l 2?
P.s Sorry for bad English but it's not my national language

Good lord...a revival of a VEEERY old thread.

While I agree with you, Guest, we do NOT discuss warez stuff here...feel free to bitch about steam but we will not help you play a cracked game, I'm afraid. Just deal with Steam. If you bought the original HL2, what've you to worry about?

Steam also takes away your right to sell the copy of the software you purchased as the serial code is forver locked to your account so no one can ever install that copy under a different account. Completely destroys the used game market for HL2 and indeed any earlier copies of HL that have been activated to work with steam. Very anti-consumer technology.

Quite. With the game, you'd also have to surrender the account details.

I thought reselling was illegal anyway? Maybe I'm wrong.. EDIT: Oh yeah, used games and stuff. I'm stupid, ignore me.

Steam has decided to stop working properly ever since I got my router. Something to do with ports I imagine, but I cba to sort it out.

One more reason to hate steam: HL2; The Aftermath has been renamed to Episode 1, and more are to follow. You can bet your arse its only sold over Steam.

Reminds me of SiN: Episodes... oh the humanity. :)

I love the idea of episodic gameplay...I don't like the idea of other people affecting my game, though. As in...let's say lots of people blew up a building in one epsode, yet I didn't. When I came to play the next episode, I'd be like WHAT THE FUCK!? Where'd my building go?

steam is what happens when Valve engineers sit around the office all day with the question " how can we waste system resources ? OH I KNOW, A PROGRAM THAT IS REQUIRED TO PLAY GAMES YOU'VE ALREADY LEGALLY PURCHASED AND ACTIVATED, AND THAT LETS YOU LAUNCH ALL THE GAMES YOU OWN BECAUSE PEOPLE ARE TO SIMPLE TO CLICK ON A FUCKING ICON CONVENIENTLY PLACED ON THE DESKTOP! EUREKA! "

Damn, aparently I'm in the minority here, because I don't think Steam is all that bad. I don't have to keep track of any fucking CD's anymore, which is a very good thing for me. Plus, if you can back up the game files once you've downloaded them (external HDD), then it's very easy to get things back in order after a reinstall. And I don't have to worry about fucking patches.

i would be playing it now if it wasnt for that shitty program you cant aviod installing while installing hl2
plus if you are on 56k and just want to play hl2 your forced to donwload the css updates

Oh, you can get around it, I know that. Bittorrent is my friend. But I like Valve, and will always pay for the games that I like. I just like to sample them to see if I actually like them before I go blow $50 on them.
