**NOTE: I am going by the movies, not the books. Check the "Notes" section for some differences between each.**

The Fellowship of the Ring

The first installment of the Lord of the Rings trilogy, the Fellowship of the Ring details the journey of the fellowship up until Amon Hen. During the battle of the Last Alliance, Isildur claims the Ring from Sauron. It goes through several owners until it gets to Bilbo. In the peaceful Shire, and old man on a cart trundles through. The old man is Gandalf, one of the Istari, or Wizards. It is here that the Quest for the Ring truly starts, although, it is not called that yet. Bilbo gives the ring to his nephew Frodo. Gandalf send Frodo to Bree, where Frodo, Sam, Merry and Pippin meet Strider. Strider, or Aragorn, leads the hobbits to Weathertop where they face the Nazgul and Frodo is stabbed. Arwen, rescues Frodo and takes him to Rivendell where he will be healed. At Rivendell the Council of Elrond decides the fate of the Ring. Here, Frodo chose to be the Ringbearer. With him, goes Gandalf, Boromir, Aragorn, Gimli, Legolas, Sam, Merry, and Pippin. The Fellowship challenges the darkness of Moria and here Gandalf is lost to the Fellowship. The Fellowship continues South, where they travel to Lorien and then to Amon Hen. At Amon Hen, Boromir is killed, Merry and Pippin are capture, Sam and Frodo continue East, Aragorn, Gimli, and Legolas go to rescue Merry and Pippin, and the Fellowship is broken.

**Note: The Two Towers and Return of the King movies switch between the plots of each of the groups. I'll be detailing one group at a time, for the sake of sense.

The Two Towers

The second installment to the Lord of the Rings trilogy, Gandalf and the Balrog duel. Eventually, Gandalf wins.

The Journey of the Ringbearers
Frodo and Sam trek through the mountains to get to Mordor. Along the way, they capture Gollum, who acts as their guide. They themselves are captured by Ithilien Rangers (No, there wasn't one with the nickname IRS). Faramir and the Rangers take care of Frodo and Sam.

The Journey of the Hobbits
Merry and Pippin, captured by Uruk-Hai on Amon Hen are now being taken to Isengard. A dispute between the Orcs and Uruk-Hai gives the Hobbits time to escape into Fangorn Forest. The two Hobbits are captured by Treebeard, master of the Ents. The two hobbits rally the Ents, and they siege Isengard, eventually capturing the tower and trapping Saruman within.

The Journey of the Three Hunters
Aragorn, Legolas, and Gimli trek through Rohan to find traces of Merry and Pippin. While they are in Fangorn, the Three Hunters meet up with Gandalf the White. They Three Hunters and Gandalf go to Meduseld. Here, Gandalf frees Theoden of the influence from Saruman. Eventually, the Rohirrim head for Helm's Deep, an ancient fortress that had never been taken. Five days the battle was fought between Isengard and Rohan. Haldir, leader of the Elves, was slain in the battle. On the Dawn of the fifth day, Gandalf and Eomer, along with a large force of cavalry save the defenders.

The Return of the King

In the final installment of the Lord of the rings Trilogy, the final battle between good and evil in the trilogy will be fought.

The Journey of the Ringbearers
Gollum has guided Sam and Frodo to Shelob's Lair. Frodo is captured by the giant spider, while Sam goes through and wounds Shelob. Unable to save Frodo, Sam takes the Ring. Same again saves Frodo from the Orcs and Uruks of Cirith Ungol. Sam also gives the Ring back to Frodo. Sam is the first and only person to ever willingly hand over the Ring. The two hobbits are again attack by Gollum. In the end, Frodo was unable to relinquish the One Ring. he is attacked by Gollum, who falls into the Crakc of Doom, taking the ring with him. Both Gollum and the One Ring are destroyed.

The Journey of Gandalf and Pippin
Pippin, who looked into the Palantir, was taken, by Gandalf to Minas Tirith. Here Pippin is made a Guard of the Citadel. During the Battle of Minas Tirith, Pippin and Gandalf rescue Faramir, whom Denethor is about to burn alive. The Gandalf and Pippin fight through the various levels of Minas Tirith along with many Gondorians.

The Journey of Merry and Eowyn
Merry and Eowyn both were going to be left with the women and children in Rohan. However, Eowyn, in disguise, takes Merry and they go to the Battle of the Pellenor Fileds. Here, Theoden, King of Rohan is killed by the Witch-King. The Witch-King is slain by Eowyn.

The Journey of the Three Hunters
Aragorn, Gimli and Legolas go on the Paths of the Dead to win the service of the Army of the Dead. The trio head to Pelargir and take the Corsair ships and set sail to Pellenor Fields. The Army of the Dead wins the battle with ease.

The Battle at the Black Gates
The Final Battle between good and evil, the last thrust to hold Sauron off so that the Ring can be destroyed. Rohirrim and Gondorian soldiers, led by Aragorn, Legolas, Gimli, Gandalf and Eomer, fight with Sauron's army.

The End of the War of the Ring
Aragorn is crowned king of the Reunited Kingdom and marries the elf maiden Arwen. Frodo, Gandalf, Elrond, Cirdan, Galadriel travel to the undying lands, eventually followed by Sam.

//Notes

The FotR book does not begin with the Battle of the Last Alliance.

In the movies, Frodo is rescued by Arwen; in the cartoon, by Legolas; in the book, by Glorfindel.

In the books, Boromir is not killed until the Two Towers.

In the books, the Two Towers does not begin with the duel between Gandalf and the Balrog. This was in fact decided in the first book.

In the books, there were no Elves at Helm's Deep.

In the books, Eomer was already at Helm's Deep, and it was a force of infantry not cavalry that saved the defenders at Helm's Deep.

In the books, Pippin looks into the Palantir in the second book.

In the books, there is a group called the Grey Company, who is not mentioned in the movie at all.

In the books, Pippin didn't light the Beacons. They were already lit.

In the Books, Saruman is not killed until the very end of the RotK.

Careful. This link is DANGEROUS. Do NOT click it. This one, however, is fine.

I had the meaning of life in my signature, but it exceeded the character limit.

If you ever feel like it one day, might want to come back and put in a little more detail. Other than that, nice summary.

Yeah..both this one and the Star Wars ones are pretty crappy summaries, but I'm pretty sure that most of the players in this RP know about both LotR and SW.
