well, as ive said, i really want to start modelling, but i cant find the objects i need to view them. i have gmax and renx, w3d viewer and importer, but dunno where the .w3d files are. please help!

also, im pretty lost on how to start editing a model, ive gotten really confused looking at the tutorials, considering i cant find what i want anywhere, and when i did find .w3d models, they didnt open in w3d viewer. all help will be greatly appreciated!

thanks in advance.

edit: i also have finalbig - i can find w3d files with them, but theres loads for one unit, i dont really know hwo to say it sorry.

For each unit you have:

*_skn - this is the actual model
*_skl - this is the skeleton required for animations to work and for it to show up properly in the W3D Viewer
*anything else - animations.

thanks - but what i mean is i cant actually open them up in viewer - only finalbig (dont think i said that above, sorry if i didnt). i would be fine if i could actually find where they are with w3d importer. at least, if thats what u are supposed to do - i didnt find the tutorials too clear, so i musta been doing something wrong. any ideas of a basic directory to the _skn and _skl?

edit: sorry if i dont answer right away, im writing some stuff up for that community project mod thing radspakr started.

edit2: ok, i think i have extracted it, i clicked on extract all in Finalbig, and extracted them all to a file. when i try to import them, it asks for .gmax files, but im using renX... any ideas?

If you've set up the W3D importer in RenX, you have to open the W3D files using the importer, not with the 'open' command.

ah thx yarrum - i tried opening it with file>import - now i think its working, i assigned the "coolfile" thingy to ctrl+k and now it works. thanks ^^

edit: also, i would just like to ask, to save some space, will adobe photoshop starter edition 3.2 be suffice for editing the model stuff (i dont know if it is the program, but whatever one is needed to edit skins/textures of models)

that would also be handy, thanks

hmm, now i have another problem... i cant find where the textures are, and i dont know if i need to convert them using the DDS converter thing. so, i would like to know please;

1)where are the textures located file wise?

2) what file type are they in, and if so, do you just convert using photoshop (im using the free version called photoshop starter addition 3.2)

thanks in advance

Textures are located in Textures.big.

2) what file type are they in, and if so, do you just convert using photoshop (im using the free version called photoshop starter addition 3.2)

Renx doesnt support textures in DDS format (Atleast, from what i remember) so you will need to convert them to TGA format.

if you put the tga textures in the same folder as the model it will show up in renx already textured

ah tyvvm thats clears up so much, im new so this is just a little confusing - now i have thaqt sorted  , the final, final problem i have is that of deleting an archers body. when i go to delete and archers body, or try to select its bow, it chooses the whole figures, and has happened with both the guarcher and ruarcher. i didnt have it yesterday, and i think the archer got some yellow bounding boxes in the centre of them instead of the purple one they had before. any ideas?

thanks so much everyone for everything so far, i cant wait to start modelling properly ^^

The color of the bounding box will make no difference, just hide it regardless. Also, the body is being selected along with the bow because they are part of the same object. You need to detach the bow from the body before you can delete it. Check out Lurtz101's tutorial on modeling for the steps to do this.

This tutorial does exactly what your looking for, removing parts from a model.

thx ^^ i didnt have the problem earlier, when i just deleted the body, the bow stayed there, its only happened recently - however, thanks for that, thatll get me round the problem ;) for as simple as some of this is supposed to be (and it is, but only when you know what ur doing), it isn't!

-----------
oh joy... the only thing i have left is when exporting the model is to check the W3D exporter options... where are they, i cant find them anywhere? they dont appear when i save the model through exporting it
