I agree with you on the mandatory preferential treatment crap and 'affirmative action', because it is bullcrap... but when you pull the line about how this leaves downtrodden the middle class white males I want to rip your throat out, because the bellyaching sounds identical to the kind of hamfisted racial policies which got such idiotic policies enacted in the first place.

Well there's no other way to fight it. I see where you're coming from, and I appreciate what you're saying, but when you discriminate in favour of a group, that automatically means you are indirectly discriminating against a different group.

Hence the phrase 'positive discrmination is still discrimination'. I'm not in favour of white middle-class healthy straight male supremacy, lol, I just cannot see that society is being equal.

In a local police force they were looking to recruit specifically asian and muslim-background individuals to help police those communities. Tell me that isn't discrmiating against non-asian, non-muslim individuals looking to join the police force. Factor in the fact that the majority of those they interviewed weren't exactly amazingly good at speaking English. What use is a police officer in England who can't speak English? Yet doubtless some of them must've been employed over other prospective candidates better suited for the job of policing, for the purpose of fulfilling their quota.

Oh, and for postive discrimination thing, I'll give you a case here in the states I read recently. There was a white man and white woman were working for a some road construction thing, repair I believe. Anyways, they both apply for a more advanced postion. The man is orginally hired. The local affirimative action thing says no, and the woman is hired instead. The man had 13 years experiance. The woman 4. They had a sort of test thing, the man got a 75, the woman 73.
Now tell me that isn't bullshit.

Well you're clearly not from Britain, and have never been, or else you wouldn't need to even ask that question.

Incidentally, @Rattus: That is, indeed, the plan. I intend to move to Canada as soon as is humanly possible. The sooner I get off this godforsaken rock the better off I'll be.

Canada is my plan should the Beckites decide it's time to retry 1861... Not a bad place to live at all. Kind of isolated from boom and bust cycles, a government at odds with itself just enough to keep any real bullshit from passing while still being functional.

And hell, besides, it's a fuckton better to have to learn French as a second language then having to learn Arabic.

Amen to that, but you don't even *have* to learn it. It's only the Quebec and Montreal regions that speak it majorly. Everywhere else speaks English. I plan to go to Ontario. It's all English-speaking there.

The way I would describe Canada is America's good bits with none of its bad bits. Gun control, relatively little crime, a much more laid-back attitude and a lot less of the gullibility and ignorance that you can encounter south of the border.

Don't get me wrong, I love America, but Canada'll be easier for me to get into (British commonwealth) and is generally...well, better for me.
