Does anyone have any information on running Yuri's Revenge on Windows 7?

Basically what happened to my version is that it's worked flawlessly a few days ago, and suddenly stopped working yesterday, and worsened today. Now, I can't even enter a battle, be it skirmish or campaign, on any of my mods or even the unmodded v1.001, with AND without NPatch installed. I've tried the superfetch/prefetch method and the compatibilty settings as most of you will be familiar with, and those haven't helped.

The version of Windows 7 I have is the fully-functional and legal Professional version, 32-bit.

HELP!

You could try Windows XP Mode and see if that helps...

There's a Virtual XP add on you could try, or just run the game as an administrator.

Isn't that just some sort of crappy VM?

Not quite, but close. It's rather effective as per reports I've read on the web.

As far as I'm aware it's like VirtualPC running a copy of Windows XP, except that it's partly integrated into the operating system (i.e. programs are virtualised on the desktop outside of a dedicated VM window and stuff).

I've tried installing the thing on XP Mode, and it comes up with an error message saying "DirectX Error - Action not supported". I can't even install RA2 or YR, let alone run them in XP Mode.

Hmm, this issue's going to bug me now... I'll go play with VirtualBox for a while and see what I can turn up.

Thanks. While I'm here, I just need to mention that if I try and run RA2MD.EXE off my normal hard drive, and not XP Mode's hard drive, it says "unable to set the video mode".

I've just updated my video card drivers, and it hasn't made a single bit of difference, although it has changed the aspect ratio.

Again, thanks for the help, really appreciate it.

Hmm, I tested various combinations of stuff with this on a Windows 7 Virtual Machine. No joy. It could be a hardware thing, or it could just be Windows 7 not supporting it at all. I've yet to try anything with Windows XP Mode, since that takes quite a while to download, and I don't particularly have the time right now.

Nighthawk, I've just this minute found out that XP Mode isn't designed for games. I found this out on some forums under a Google search for "DirectDraw acceleration Windows 7 XP Mode" (without the quotes).

No need to look into XP Mode for this, since I'm using VirtualBox now. Hope that helps things.

EDIT: I found that VirtualBox hasn't worked, so I've switched to VMWare. This seems to be working for me.

If it wasn't for the good old trusty H2IK sequence that I found out from the previous episode of "Defying Gravity", I'd never have solved the problem.

For those not in the know, H2IK stands for "Hell if I know".

Thanks for the help you guys gave me earlier! END EDIT.

If it was saying Direct X error did you try upgrading DX?

VirtualXP is just Windows Virtual PC with an XP VM. Main difference on Win7 is you can run a program installed to the VM without needing the whole VM running. It is very effective, I use it a lot with little to no performance issues, but then I don't use it for gaming. I'd be surprised if it didn't perform better than VMWare, if you still can't find a more viable solution.

Why are you playing around with VMs? RA2 and YR work fine native under windows 7 if you set the compatibilty mode correctly and perhaps install the latest directx redistributable. BTW, the Virtual PC VM does run a full VM, it just uses remoteapp to effectively connect windows 7 to the app that is running in the vm. It is very similar to classic mode on PowerPC macs with OS X and OS 9 installed in its behaviour.
