Folks,

Just wanted to point out this modeller. Fractalsponge has built a variety of Imperial starships and smaller craft. The detail levels are very high and IMNSHO the artist given quite a lot of thought to the designs. He has a gallery available on his site and the models for some of his projects are also available there or elsewhere.

From comments he's made on the board I found him on it seems that canon, logic, and internal technical consistency are of as much interest to him as they are to PR. Now, I'm guessing these models are incredibly high poly count and not suitable for modding...but that doesn't rule out contacting him and seeing if he's interested in doing commissions.

I don't know if he's a gamer or not but it's worth a shot.

I'm considering contacting him with a collaboration for my TECTOR design ideas.

Anyway, here's the URL:

Absolutely awesome. Really hope to see him modelling for EAW. I cannot imagine how was he able to create those magnificient models, but it is obvious this guy has talent and is perseverant and patient... Really, really beautiful.

I went to the Imperator-Class Star Destroyer page and my Avira detected an HTML virus.

Could be a false alarm but just a warning be careful.

Avast! also detected one. It seems to be the only part of the page with such an occurrence though.

Those are really great works. The Bellator-class is certainly an interesting one. I guess it was supposed to be something like a partially Mon Calamari-ized Star Destroyer. That and the 'Pride of Defiance' images are my favorite ones methinks.

Reminds me of good old times on SFM when he was building that ISD... didn't know he was still modeling!

And yeah, I have one of the versions of his ISD laying around, as I recall it is around 1.8 million polygons :p

I really don't do requests and my Arnor Soldier is not fit for BFME. Don't ask me for either.

That's an insane level of modeling. Wow...

Ugh how can you tell if you have an HTML virus and what is the name of it please?

EDIT:I don't know if my Anti Virus will catch it and if my high security settings on my browser stopped it

I viewed everything and nothing is wrong. Don't sweat it. I've been around for awhile...

I've seen the site, yeah. There are a couple problems with using something like that for a game though.

One, you'd have to reduce a million and some polys to ~5000 tris. I can and have taken models down by 75% or so for LOD meshes, but 99+% is absurd; it probably wouldn't turn out.

Two, they're not textured or (I'm assuming) skinned. Even if the models work, I'm not sure who would be able to do that for us.

Certainly the renders look nice, but I think it'd be a lot less of a headache to work with something a little more manageable. Also, there's something to be said about consistency in art style and changing all of our star destroyers would be a lot of work for yet-questionable (have to see them post-poly reduction) improvement.

<DevXen> Today I was at the store and saw a Darth Vader action figure that said "Choking Hazard." It was great.

On a much less impressive scale, but still very nice:
First Strike mod, and Freeworlds:Tides of War have been churning out quite a few great models. Both have been very open to cross platform sharing, and have many models better than anything I've seen in EaW. They might still be too high quality though...

Freeworlds in particular has a ton of new space station models, many of them canon, which is something I know EaW is starved for.

For our purposes, those would actually be better - they're actually running in some game. With that being the case, the conversion process becomes much simpler and potentially doable. The only major problem I'd have with it is not having anything to offer their mods in return... we are ridiculously bare-boned for a mod team. I'll definitely think about it though, thanks.
