I spent about an hour looking around, and believe it or not, lucasarts actually issued a hot fix patch for this issue.

This solves the issue of clicking "Start game" in the FoC start menu, and getting an exception error. The problem apparently happens when you have over 3gigs of RAM in your system. This link has the official fix. Hope I'm not totally late with this, buuuut whatevs. XD

It's for those with Vista-x64, and more than 2GB RAM. And probably was included in the Gold Edition of FoC.

No, it's not in the Gold Edition. This is a relatively new thing that they quietly rolled out. Everyone with Vista 64 needs to get it since it's a end-user sort of fix opposed to something I can put in the mod.

Hmmm...

I've never had a problem.

You might have Mike NL's ersatz fix that tricks the graphics details settings. I think the LA patch actually lets you use all of your RAM, but since I don't have it, I can't be certain on that point.

That sounds nice. FoC usually uses about 600MB-700MB or so. Maybe I'll try this out and see if I see any improvement.

EDIT: Right off the bat, there's a tag <Value>00003f?UtT</Value> added in at the end of a GAMECONSTANTS.XML inserted into the FoC Data\XML folder. There's also a GRAPHICDETAILS.XML there, too. I assume that's Mike.nl's fix, or something similar.

I'm pretty sure they changed something in the source. Didn't it update swfoc.exe?

Nope. The two XML files were the only changes made in the entire FoC directory.

I don't understand how you're compatible with someone without the fix; not to mention how it works with PR, since we replace GameConstants.

Oh, it completely removed compatibility. I had to delete the files.

What a terrible patch. I guess I'll go with Mike's fix for the release.

I'm somewhat confused. Are you saying the LA fix is terrible? If so, why? I want the best PR game possible, so if there is a better fix for some reason, please enlighten me. :p

Not really a better fix, but I expected more from an official patch. The LA patch breaks multiplayer compatibility and doesn't actually allow you to address your extra RAM. It's a joke. If I use Mike's fix in v1.2, at least it will be compatible.

I didn't really have much time to test it, since it removed multiplayer compatibility, and I've been doing quite a bit of multiplayer lately. So I personally can't conclusively say whether or not it actually helps.

It wouldn't be able to without updating the EXE.

Ah, I see. Hrm... accessing all of my RAM would be pretty stellar. Where does one get the Mike fix?

Mike's fix won't do that. The only difference is that I can incorporate his into the mod (since it's OS-generic, being based on how much RAM your system can detect) to sync multiplayer. The official fix will desync multiplayer for any Vista 64 user that installs it. At any rate, I got his from the PG forums. Search for threads started by Mike.nl?

I search for his name "Mike.nl" and it comes up with like 5 topics that none of them have to do with this memory fix. I am going to search that appears in the right top corner where it says "help search members calender". Is this were to search? I am using the "filter by member name". I cannot find a search options for threads started by name.

When I run the search in this forum, Petrolution.net, it only comes up with 2 threads started by Mike.nl and 3 other threads started by someone else. All are dated more than a year ago.

In a previous post by PR in this thread he called the fix "ersatz", but when I search that it only comes up with this thread. Can we please get a link or proper directions to finding this Mike.nl fix?

Thank you.

It's possible it got purged in the Great Board Nerf of 2009. I'll see what I can dig up.

Ah, here it is.
