Figured I'd start a thread on the protagonist aswell. Finally got something of a concept that i feel fits the guy, so here's the drawing i'll most likely work out of when i start doing the basemesh.Posted Image

as long as he'll get some metal bits to cover up them nipples, it's cold on the seas you know, nothing like a shiny bit of metal to keep you warm..!

Well I'd think a loincloth is a bit unvikingish, so a sort of kilt-like skirt is more for the northern weather. Also, man-nipples are totally okay in my world, although they won't be a big detail in the end. Anyway, if it needs be we might give him a wolf-pelt for his back, although I'm planning to give him a proper roundshield to have on it aswell.

I just noticed the title "the viking" in the list of today's active topics. As I don't know your project, I'm not sure if this is of any value, but I did some research on viking reenactment a year ago, and posted a lot of links to today's active vikings in this post:

Plenty of good stuff there, thanks.

Not that we are going for a very realistic style on this project, but the weapons and jewelry references should be helpful.

Cool concept :) I do like those proportions!
As for the kilt: Maybe it would be more vikingish if the fabric were thicker (like some animal pelt or heavy wool) and/or he had some trousers underneath? And as far as the lip goes, I really like the one on the face to the far left! :D

Yeah, i'm not too pleased with the kilt right now. I'm wondering about adding some more details to it, shouldn't be that much work. Anyway, I've done a few renders of the current model, i'll vimeo them within the hour once i feel i've gotten the composition down.

A pelt of fur with some pants below sounds like an awesome idea, you've ruined my saturday night now :)

edit: here we go, wonder how that transition bug survived, I fixed it but noo... anyways, working on redoing the kilt mesh into a wolf-pelt mesh now, add some more details and stuff where its needed and give him a crotch. Every hero needs a crotch :D

A small update, started rigging the guy, but been having some problems with ab-auto-rig in maya 2011, so i had to jump back and forth. working on the face, but more 2011 bugs on older scripts are annoying me.

I think it would look awesome if we could get some fresnel shading on his skin in-game!

What we have learned of this is this: Alphas has to be pretty damn binary around the edges to get any effect when in the low 1024's.

Also, this shield needs some more work. Bleh. I did make an edge along with the metal but it barely shows here. Better figure out another way of doing it. maybe I'll separate the meshes in the seam and do a DJ-cheat :thumbsupsmiley:

One of the few things I've learned the last few years of 3d is that you should always cheat and create shortcuts, so it's all about seeing where the others are cutting to save yourself some time :)

Yeah, I'm considering adding the hairstrand-textures to the tool unwrap to get them hi-res enough to work out. Either that or finding more space in the main-uv, but that one is brimming.

Anyway, I've done most of the rigging now. There will be some skin weighting and shit to be done while I do a rough animation, but that's to be expected.

A quick update on Grymleif. Been animating and testing him ingame. I've had some minor problems getting this model into unity, I have to clean up the scene like hell to make it work, but that's to be expected.

Anyway, did some Quick concepts for some of his weapons. I'm seriously considering letting him pick up whatever weapons the enemy might have, since we got models of those as well... we might need more animations for that, but it shouldn't be impossible. Anyway, heres a WallHammer and the throwing axe :p
