I've got to say this is a problem in society today. The quote from this movie I'd like to highlight is "you are entitled to have your own beliefs, but you are not entitled to have your own facts".

And that's not just for gene-therapy of plants and rice and shit, but creationism and other fields as well. But I guess people would cry foul if we started some UN-fact organization that comes beating down doors if you are spreading lies :p

I think it's considerably less of a problem than theory that is commonly presented as fact.

Besides that, what is a 'fact' other than a 'widely held belief'?

There really is a lot of interesting talks on TED. I can honestly say that I am probably the only person in my whole school who believe GE Foods are the future because as Michael Specter said people are too scared to believe in Science I think they've been watching too much Dr Who :p ... How I see it is that we need to do what NEEDS to be done and screw the consequences...
They say the future is only as predictable as the past..... Probably because they're the same thing.

Or maybe they've been playing too much Bioshock... That's grim enough to put anyone off science.

And a 'fact' is something which is objectively and independently verifiable, whereas a widely-held belief may not be.

The problem is that science is too worried about this rather than doing actual science.

Well if they didn't spend money on spinning things like this, we would be stuck even further back in time. Besides, the guys doing science and the guys talking science are rarely the same people.

Well I dunno what they're trying to prove with this video. I agree with it... but if you disagree, you disagree. It's really only the scientific community watching this in the first place, and the rare people who this video is referring too will... well... won't listen.
