Oh, I hope they don't do that..

Later, hearing of a vast host of Goblins on the move, Beorn arrived at the Lonely Mountain in time to strike the decisive blow in the Battle of Five Armies, in his bear form, slaying the new Goblin leader, Bolg, and his bodyguards; without direction, the Goblin army scattered and were easy pickings for the other armies of Men, Elves, Dwarves, and Eagles.

That's why :p
Besides:

Comments made by Weta Workshop indicate that in the adaptation, Beorn's transformation from man to bear will be a major special effects sequence.

All from Wikipedia, but still

You know when Gandalf says "Perhaps you know my cousin Radagast?"

It will cut to an extreme close-up of Beorn looking thoughtful. Then a picture of Radagast will flash across the screen as quickly as the Eye of Sauron did in the first three movies. Then Beorn will say "...Yes."

That will be the extent of Radagast's part.

Seeing as we've heard nothing about Saruman or Christopher Lee lately, perhaps Radagast will take over Saruman's role?

Lee won't be flying to NZ, so unless they want to film his scenes in the UK, I guess he's out of the picture. So it might be possible Radagast takes the role of Saruman, however, I rather doubt it.

But I wouldn't know

Actor Elijah Wood is confirmed to star in the upcoming movie, The Hobbit

I really do hope he'll do a voiceover in that case, "telling the story" so to speak.. Also, Orlando for Legolas!

Yeah, they got the geology of Weathertop all wrong.

There's always going to be differences between books and their film adaptations. May I humbly suggest you get over it and enjoy the damn film for what it is rather than what you think it should be?
I hope I am a good enough writer that some day dwarves kill me and drink my blood for wisdom.

Truly.

Everyone has their own "image" in their head how things should be. :)

But realistically speaking, The Hobbit is a fast paced book, and many events transpire from beginning to end. And to be adapted to film, it will need to be even faster paced, and likely, many things will be left out.

The book is a book, and the movie is a movie.

This, along with LOTR, is an adaption of the books. It's two different platforms. Hence they're different :)
Besides, they "have" to reach out for the bigger audience.. As long as they stick with the story as far as possible, within reason, I'll be okay.

Now, if Thorin survives and takes a dwarven army, along with Radagast, to fight Sauron's fortress in Mirkwood, that is where I draw the line :)
Or if Legolas, and not Thranduil, is the leader of the Mirkwood elves.. I hope to see Legolas with a really minor role.

edit: as Vort says, you have to take the movies for the movies, book for book.

I don't think it can live up to the old cartoon though. Such a classic.

Council of Elrond is a good source for Hobbit movie news, if you're into that sort of thing. Come to think of it, I knew this stuff on the seventh, when it was posted there. Latest news: Andy Serkis, Christopher Lee, and the Ians (McKellan and Holm) most likely returning. w00t! :p

How are they going to work Sir Ian Holm into it? As I recall there's not much mention of hundred-year-old Bilbo in The Hobbit.
