I've just experienced the extended edition of The Fellowship of the Ring with a live orchestra! Yes, not simply a LotR concert, but the whole film with every single score performed live.

Calling the experience mind-blowing doesn't quite do it justice. Cinema doesn't even remotely come close to this. We all know the LotR film music is great, but having it played live right before your eyes (and ears) is... epic, for lack of a better word. The 21st Century Symphony Orchestra, which performed the scores, did an absolutely outstanding job and so did the chorus. That, together with the superb acoustic design of the Lucerne Culture and Congress Centre, made you actually feel the music during the whole film. The intensity was just amazing. I actually had chills running down my spine when they performed The Breaking of the Fellowship at the end.

Apparently there were and will be performances in New York as well, so if you happen to live in that area, check out The Radio City LotR Concert and go experience it yourself if you can. If you live in Europe, consider a trip to Switzerland next year :)

Was the movie silenced or did it have all the voices and sound effects? Just wondering because a live orchestra can potentially drown out sounds from the movie. Also, I'm assuming there were breaks? Or maybe it was a orchestra marathon! :)

No, it did have all the voices and sound effects, but you're right in that the sounds were often drowned by the orchestra when the music got louder. Especially the voices couldn't be heard completely any more at times. However, the film had German subtitles and I suspect most of the audience knew it already anyway. It certainly helped if you didn't need to focus on the story and could instead let your eyes wander between screen, orchestra and conductor.

There was a single 30-minute break in the middle, but that was it. The chorus obviously got some nice, long breaks during the performance, but the strings were playing non-stop, essentially.

"Classical" performances of this length aren't so unusual, Rob. I've seen longer works played. (with breaks of course)

It sounds like quite an experience though. I heard the same thing is going to be done in the Netherlands, but tickets are incredibly expensive. :)

I really don't do requests and my Arnor Soldier is not fit for BFME. Don't ask me for either.
