If any of you have the artistic talent and inclination, start playing around with the Map Editor. Better yet, Photoshop or 3ds Max. As soon as we find the department heads, we'll put calls out for mappers, texturers, and modelers.

I think I can handle mapping- so far my attempts at modeling were way over my head (I have trouble drawing polygons :)). The editor seems intuitive enough, but I can't figure out how to get the maps to work with PR... or to use PR assets. I installed it in the Mods/Phoenix Rising directory, but it's not working.

Don't think, Fingan, you aren't properly equipped for it.

It's quite difficult to get the map editor to work with mod assets, yes. I think I provided information on how to do so at some point, but it was a long time ago...I'll see if I can find it.

EDIT:

Okay, what you need to do is install the map editor as normal, then copy and paste the map editor executable and all the dlls in the same directory as it, into the top folder of PR (that is, just inside the PR folder above Data). Then if you run the exe that's inside the PR folder, it should have access to the PR file hierarchy and all the assets.

On the topic of mapping, I do believe there's some sort of error when placing stationary turrets, however. Not sure why or how to get around it.

I'll give that a try... and by the way, what directory do I save them into? ...PR/Data/Art/Maps? Or is there a different one for skirmish (which I will stick for now to for ease of testing)?

ah...skirmish maps for mods can be difficult to get working. Well, certainly for online multiplayer syncing. For PR they should be placed in the Maps directory, preferably with the prefix _MP and all the relevant map properties set up for skirmish.

Thanks- installing now...

-edit- I installed it as instructed, and upon starting I received this pop-up " Expect strange errors... xml parse error- File.\Data\XML\SurfaceFX.xml: file has syntax errors" The editor still starts and seems to work as far as I can tell. Is this normal?

-edit- I can edit terrain and most objects, but the editor consistently crashes when I place a Mineral_Extractor_Pad from the space buildables or ground buildables; other structures seem to work.

Copy paste the contents into an XML checker (I use http://www.w3schools...om_validate.asp ) and it'll tell you where the errors are, so you can fix them if they start to annoy you too much.

Is there a downloadable application for this? When I enter the file location there is no result, but when I paste the xml into the field my browser crashes... ;) How do you use it?

Don't worry about that error. It's something left over from Petroglyph and doesn't appear to affect anything.

EDIT: Also, if you do end up looking into XML editing or whatever, I recommend Notepad++, for which you can get the XML Tools Plug-in (2nd down in the letter X section).

Ah- so what's causing the skirmish structure errors- it seems to be only the income-generating buildings causing a CTD, every other structure that I tested is fine. Is this a usual thing with an easy fix, or should I reinstall?

You're getting errors from the mines? Odd. Everything I used worked fine save for the weapons platforms. Not sure why the mines are giving you trouble, or how to go about fixing it. ;)

I'll try reinstalling it then- I must have done something wrong. Thanks for all the help... And sorry Ghostrider for stealing your thread and leading it off track. ;)
