I've been trying to watch some old BFME replays from GameReplays, but I was harshly reminded of how ridiculously incompatible downloaded replays can be.
I know different patches could be causing this, but I remember I DID manage to watch some replays a long time ago, so I'm not sure what the exact problem is.

Do I have to reinstall, then proceed to test every single patch version until it hopefully works, or is there another easier fix?

This shouldn't actually be much of a problem, yes it's the patch versions that makes some replays incomatible.
When you download at GameReplays, just be careful that you download replays that are of the 1.03 version.
The version of the replay is always indicated on the site, so just check it the next time you download one and it should be no problem to watch them.

I feel silly... I had downloaded a couple replays and rechecking them now, the ones I'd tried to watch were 1.02.
Wrong replay at the wrong time, ha ha.
