Damn, Adobe programs sure are expensive. I need Photoshop, Flash, premiere and After Effects(well I don't really want AE but its better than nothing, and the others(nuke, fusion) are 3-5 times more expensive) to be able to do all the different jobs I've got on my platter. But buying them one by one would be more expensive than buying the master suite...Which contains plenty of programs I really don't want to use. I guess that's how Adobe keeps their stock numbers up.

Meh, anyway, I dunno how many in here really has to worry about this sort of stuff. But if you are studying these things and planning on working with these programs on your own after you're done, I heavily recommend you get your teachers to try to get a good deal with their suppliers. I got Maya for the upgrade price instead of the retail price a few weeks back, and that saved me about $4000(still paid $2300 for it but I'll get the upgrade 2012 upgrade for free and the 2013 will only cost like $800-1000).

If you got any tips or license problems of your own please do tell. I suspect there will be open-source evangelists coming by

Yes been there done that, but out of future economic safety and the right to brag to easily-awed customers into submission it helps to have the licenses in place. Also, I can rent them out to people and earn money that way.

I actually don't worry much about proxies because I'm on relatively good terms with the local ISP and I believe they would give a warning if someone started knocking on my doors. Also I believe they know they are earning money on letting people do as they please with big-ass broadband subscriptions, so they won't bother unless it becomes a support-problem(had a problem on my home network with a noob torrent-downloader that had 200 active torrents on her PC. choked up the router connections and I had no clue where the problems came from before I noticed that)

I live in the US so having a proxy is just necessary these days. Nobody needs to know what porn I download, but anyway.

I don't like expensive licensing. It makes it impossible for a home user (me) to have a legit copy of the application. Like, for instance, I wanted a legit license of Visual Studio 2008 Pro, but it's like... $1200. As if I would even consider burning $1200 on a license for anything. Microsoft releases them as freebies at least but still, I wanted the whole package. But meh, freebies work for now.

My uni teachers use to work at a proper game company, and mentioned in passing that they had/used cracked versions of software XD

Yes there is quite a bit of pirated software running around in proper businesses, mostly to get away from the validation and all the hassle of moving a program from one PC to the other. I believe most of these firms either buy the licenses when they got cash left over before taxes come and take them, or they have so many people working with a program that they really need more licenses to cover all the hours.

I would rather buy these licenses because they can be deducted as a expense, thus saving me from taxes. Also, when I make money on something I feel its safer to have the stuff in place in case someone comes by and checks you out.

A business is one thing, but what about individuals who want a license? Most intelligent business leaders include licensing in their initial plan so they can afford it, but some guy who wants to earn some cash freelancing can't just up and spend $700 on a license for, say, Photoshop. There's a reason why people pirate software, and it's not always because they don't want to pay. Such is the case with me; I'd gladly pay for a legit license, but not when I have to dig into my savings to do it.
