quite a special date in that case. I liked this article about the topic.

US Civil War 150th anniversary: How US remains divided
http://www.bbc.co.uk...canada-13040351

"Southerners were of the opinion they were defending the Constitution... against a brutal, materialistic invasion force from the North," said David Aiken, a professor of literature at the College of Charleston and a founding member of the League of the South, which advocates Southern independence.

[...]

"What's your greatest value?" he asked. "Unity or liberty?"

The parallels with the America of 2011 are clear. At Tea Party meetings across the country, states' rights is a rebel yell among many who see today's government as overweening and rapacious.

Thats a good question though. I believe those that choose liberty over unity shoot themselves in the foot, "united we stand divided we fall" and all that. Liberty won't work if you don't have the unity to uphold it.

Those who would sacrifice liberty for security will deserve neither and lose both. Or something like that. In this case, security refers to a strong union. You clamp down on liberty to keep the country strong and people rebel and it all falls apart anyway. Ah well.
I hope I am a good enough writer that some day dwarves kill me and drink my blood for wisdom.

Yeah I know that one too, combine it with mine and we got an endless loop. But I suspect that is the best way forward for mankind, staying still in one train of thought for more than 20-50 years brings stagnation.
