Just found this kinda hilarious: Superman threatens renounce US citizenship

In a blogpost at The Weekly Standard, senior writer Jonathan Last questioned Superman's beliefs, now that he seems to have rejected the United States. "Does he believe in British interventionism or Swiss neutrality?" Last wrote. "You see where I'm going with this: If Superman doesn't believe in America, then he doesn't believe in anything."

I have to say this sort of falls into the "international citizen" philosophy. Who in their right mind with such power would argue for being 100% citizen of X?

I seem to recall hearing that at one point Superman was awarded honorary citizenship of every UN member nation? But whatever, he's a fictional character. If anyone genuinely gives a shit where Superman feels like claiming as his new home, they should reassess their priorities, and realise that the only important comic news of recent times is that Joss Whedon will be writing and directing the new Avengers film. Made my day, that did.

Yeah, he believes in Swiss neutrality now.

I fail to understand why anyone would even remotely care about this... the fictional Superman character can be a citizen of whatever country his designers want him to be. He can move to Ouagadougou for all I care. It's not like any part of the Superman story was ever credible in the first place.

You're talking to people in a country where they give a shit about Mickey Mouse's birthday. Some people in the US care way too much about fictional characters.

LOL @ Phil!

Seriously, I saw this story on the BBC. Somehow I found it utterly nonsensical that it even got reported. How the hell is it even newsworthy?

A sign that nothing else interesting is going on in the world. Which is more or less true - a couple of rich people got married. That's the only notable event of the world this week.

It cost the taxpayers £20 million directly, sure, but I've seen estimates that have said the nation in total has lost about £1 billion, or possibly even more, because of the two consecutive four-day weekends we're all taking. So, way to go, future king.

I expect most of the money lost will be recouped in beer money mate.

True. Half of that was just for the policing, though. Gutted they didn't want us to go down. The double time payments would have paid my holiday to Cuba off :)
