You weren't big into the trilogy films either though were you?

I'm looking forward to seeing how they visualise various things like Dol Guldur, I'll be taking a camera in with me and sitting in good spot.

It was an enjoyable experience. I'm fine with it being an adaptation of the Hobbit and other Tolkien works rather than a straight copy/paste of the book's content alone. I can see how it would bother more diehard purists, though.

I'm pretty certain it's the last series for lotr so why not try to include as much content as possible.

I wouldn't mind seeing a four-season treatment of the Silmarillion on HBO. Have a season dedicated to the four big stories of the First Age. Give them 10 to 15 episodes to cover all of the content.

Season One: The Oath of Feanor. Creation of the world, exodus of the Noldor from Valinor, the early wars with Morgoth over the Silmarils.
Season Two: The Quest for the Silmaril. Introduce Men and expand on the Sindar, with Beren's love story with Luthien being the focus of the story.
Season Three: The Children of Hurin. Basically an adaptation of the book released a few years ago. It's self-contained but builds into larger things quite well.
Season Four: The War of Wrath. Tell the story of Turin and the Fall of Gondolin, the war between Thingol and the Dwarves, and finish with the chaining of Morgoth in the abyss.

It's fun to think about.

I did see the movie about a week ago, what a disappointing experience ... horrible bad, in fact worse than that. Clearly the director has been corrupted by the megabucks of the Dark Lords of Filmindustry. Shame on Peter Jackson.

I totally agree with Namo, I enjoyed the movie as the story but for the effects, I hated all the CGI...
The Goblins spoke fluint english and Azog looked like an albino on steroids.
They had way too much comedy compared to LotR and I didnt get that same vibe.
The scenery was very hard to get used to.
The people of Dale were playing with fucking kites??
Radagast looked so stupid IMO.
The Wargs looked nothing like the LotR versions along with majority of the goblins and orcs.

I enjoyed the original actors/ actresses, the lore was fair, I loved the dwarven armour, the White counsel and Sarumans conspiracy was awesome.
I could be listing all night but I'll give my full account some other time, if you watched the LotR trilogy a million times like me, then you won't get the expected vibe ;)

What did you expect?

This is a different story, and it's also a children's story in origin. It's no longer "orcs are evil, good vs bad". I haven't watched the LotR trilogy a million times, because that would amount to over 1000 days of watching, but I've seen it quite a few times. I never expected the same vibe. Maybe you expected a more mature and serious story like LotR is, in which case it's your own fault :p
As for me, I really enjoyed the movie. I'll guess we'll know why goblins, wargs and orcs were heavily altered for this movie in the bonus materials for the blu-ray\dvd, but I'm guessing that goblins are all about screech and evil looks in LotR, along with not talking. Wargs look weird in LotR, while these Orcs are from the northern mountains. Could be enough to make them different.

Just curious, Lauri ... at what blistering framerate are you looking said movie?!

LotR Extended Edition plays for at least 12 hours, the three parts combined. Accounting for some sleep, food and drink, and a rudimentary RL inbetween, realistic you can watch it only once a day ... that would amount to about 2.750 years of daily watching before hitting the one million mark.

Man. Watching this movie made my mind asplode. It was really enjoyable, and Kili was crazy hot. Except Kili and Fili didn't really feel like Dwarves.

Seeing those dwarven guards made me think immediately, "SEE. THEY DON'T HAVE GIANT SHOULDERPADS."

The most exciting part of The Hobbit is the games that are going to be released afterwards. I'm praying to Goddess Madoka for BFME III.

I'm hoping for a good Tolkien RPG myself. LOTRO just doesn't do it for me. Something closer to Skyrim would be more my cup of tea :p

Maybe another LOTR RPG about a Gondorian Ranger, an Elf, and some Dwarf who follows Thorin's party secretly guided by Gandalf. Because we don't have enough of those.

I enjoyed it. I probably would have enjoyed it more were it in 2D* and had someone not vomited in the cinema right at the start, causing the first 5 minutes to be replayed.

* I still don't like 3D. Despite adding an extra dimension, it doesn't feel any more real. The problem is that in real life, there are an infinite number of fields of vision. On someone's face, their nose is closer to you than their cheekbones, which are in turn closer than their eyes and ears. In a 3D film, people are like cardboard cut outs moving around. Sure, some depth is added to the whole screen but it feels very fake. In addition, I found it to cause blurring at the start of scenes and there were even some moments where things at the very front appeared semi-transparent. I would like to see it again in 2D.

As for the film itself, it wasn't 'edge of you seat' like the FotR. I found it to be a little slow and some elements seemed forced - especially with regards to creating familiarity with the original trilogy. As it's been some time since I read the Hobbit, I can't speak much for lore - but generally I trust PJ to make decisions that strengthen the film-viewing experience.

But I did love being in Middle-earth again and seeing cultures, characters, buildings etc that until now I've only dreamt of or seen in BFME mods. The lead acting was strong and the visuals and work by WETA stunning as always.
