Smilies are not punctuation marks. That is the one rule to follow.

They are not?
Incorrect usage, sirrah. The proper way to have said that would be "They are not "
Careful. This link is DANGEROUS. Do NOT click it. This one, however, is fine.
I had the meaning of life in my signature, but it exceeded the character limit.

There is no excuse for improper spelling and grammar. Except maybe being a foreigner, I guess then it's excusable. But if English is your first language, you should really be getting it right, if not for the sake of the forum then for the sake of getting into good habits. Statistically speaking, people who use proper grammar on a regular basis are more employable because they give the impression of better education and greater intelligence, regardless of whether or not that is the case. It's a fact. There have been studies done on this. So if you get into the habit of correct punctuation and grammar somewhere not particularly important, like Revora, it will probably help you later on when it is important, like in a job interview or when writing a CV or personal statement.
As for emoticons, they are acceptable for conveying tone when the words themselves could prove ambiguous. That is their purpose. That is why they were created. Please, for the sake of emoticons everywhere, let them do what they were born to do. Respect the internet.

I hope I am a good enough writer that some day dwarves kill me and drink my blood for wisdom.
