greetings fellow MODDERS! I have had aspirations for thus forum for a while... To make this program a better place, And now I am trying to put that into action.

I got this idea from another forum. I am going to start a "adopt a newbie" program. It will be split into 3 sections, mapping, graphics and coding. It will involve when newbies join the forum a "mentor will be assigns to them to help them until they are skilled enough and "graduate". Mentors will sign up in one, two, or all of the categories.

This is not the official thread for it. First I need a list of MODDERS game enough forthe challenge... And this can be anyone who knows about modding to some degree.

The mentors job will involve answering any questions your newbie asks, giving them bits of code and sharif your knowledge.. If you can't answer it, then you ask someone who does. But a mentor does not just give everything to their student. They have to teach them. Meaning giving them pointers and helping them along but havingthem doing something for themselves...

I need people to volunteer to put this together... So if anybody has wished to make this forum a better place, wants to teach other MODDERS or just wants to help out :D

Also if u could get some backing up by mod members/leaders or admins that would be AMAZING.. Thanks to all who at least read this! Feel free to leave your comments or suggestions on improving my methods fir going about this.

John 3:16 (NIV)
For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.

Didn't someone try this a long time ago? I'm trying to find the thread, I think it was Rad's idea or Ridder Geels. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I swear someone tried something like this and it failed. It had something to do with a community mod or something.

Edit: Well it wasn't exactly the same but it was something similar. I found the thread.

I talked to RG about it. He said that it would be an interesting idea. And I'm waiting for an answer to see if he is in. Just because it failed once doesn't mean It will now. This is why I want a bundle if mentors first before we start it. It thrived in the other forum I was on.

I see... yes this is a little different... but it still can thrive... a past failure doesn't mean it will now ^_^

another thing i could see happening is that maybe mods (anywhere from mini mods to like S.E.E or TPW or TDH) could offer "jobs" to graduated newbies depending on their skill or what catagory they specialize in... almost like a modding college... maybe it's a little far fetch but it would be a great way to train modders intensly.

I wasn't assuming it would fail. I was just saying what happened last time someone tried something similar to this. But to be honest I think that this will fail or atleast not succeed to the level you are expecting. Though your major problem will be finding people to do this, just because there isn't a lot of people that have time to be doing this. The community is dead as it is. And those few people that are still around are working on there own thing and those barely have time as it is to even work on there own mod.

There's also Rad's List, but that's more of a mods/modders looking for work type thing. I also tried for a while to turn the IP Clan into some sort of mapping hub with mentoring and such, but for certain differences in attitude, that didn't take off either.

The problem is that coding and graphics are quite large areas, and i think you'll find it difficult to 'mentor' someone in them. The forums are set up so that if people have questions, they post them, and hopefully someone more experienced will come along and help them through it - or atleast, point them in the direction of a tutorial. If they then want to go off and talk privately on MSN or something, that's up to them.

Mapping on the other hand is different, as each map is a self-contained thing. It's quite a bit easier to critique someone's map, and go through things like "the terrain here could be improved" or "try fiddling with the textures on this bit" ;). It's less of a black-and-white skill, as opposed to coding which either works or it doesn't. You might be able to mentor okay in modelling or skinning, but there are so few decent modellers/skinners these days, that finding someone with that sort of time will be difficult.

Still, i'll stick my hand up as it's not a bad idea. I've sort of been mentoring Fudge anyway, who i scouted from the T3A download section and is now doing maps for TDH as a result.

If there are any mappers out there who would like to improve their mapping, or even just receive some feedback on their work, feel free to PM me or post in here ^_^

I did indeed have that idea some time ago and that idea morphed into CoPro.
I do think some of the older mods could probably take some newer modders under their wing and train them.
I think the tutor shouldn't go any further than giving suggestions.

But at the same time it's important that people learn for themselves.
When I first started here there were very few tutorials you learned the very basics and worked from there.
Everything we know now was built from that.

Alright... Maybe putting a note out their for a few older mods to be open for putting up open slots? or maybe creating a basic mod for newbies to work on as a training project? maybe a few modders could put something together? also i had the idea for maybe a "newbie Q&A" tread? so any newbies who have basic off the bat questions can post them and it could be a good place for newbies to find previously solved questions?

I personally think this might not work.
A few reasons:
1) The forum is on its last legs
2) Most new commers (forgot how to spell it) loose all motivation within a week
3) And finally, most people only have very limited time for modding.
Unfortanetley, the time of a post every 2 minutes (literally) is over.
As sad as it is, I think this place may live a year or two.
I don't want to be negative.
And what stops the n00bs and newbies from the way we all did?
'Follow a tutorial, if you get stuck, then ask for help. Then eventually you can make your own codes, skins, models, maps etc.'
Not trying to be pessisist :p

Hosted mods aren't going to offer up positions on their teams for newbies, for what i'd thought were obvious reasons ;)

or maybe creating a basic mod for newbies to work on as a training project? maybe a few modders could put something together?

That is exactly what the old Community Project was. It didn't work then, i find it very unlikely it would work now.

also i had the idea for maybe a "newbie Q&A" tread? so any newbies who have basic off the bat questions can post them and it could be a good place for newbies to find previously solved questions?

Yep, we have that already. They're called the T3A forums.

The forums are far from being on their 'last legs'. There may be a bit of a lull at the moment in public news, but mods are as active as ever behind the scenes ;) Despite swapping over from your old account, you've still been here barely over a year. There's no need to act all doom and gloom just yet.

Sorry Haldir.
It just seemed to have lost so much activity over the past year.
But the point I was trying to get to was that there aren't enough experienced modders to help the newer ones compared to how it could've worked a year ago.
That's all I was trying to say :p

Well as the members of the forums get older, they usually tend to have more schoolwork and such, meaning they are less likely to visit the forums.
And of course there are the people who lose interest, it sucks but that happens.
If all I do for them is give tips and hints and tell them were to look, I could do that for several people, so it's not like one "student" per "mentor".

Well I only started mapping to a fair standard back in april (thanks to Haldir) so I dont have as much experience as some of the other mappers around but I'd gladly give suggestions, any tips I know or feedback to any new mappers.

alright... ;) maybe me and clank (unknown) can form a little team or something for training people who want it...

Well then i have an idea... (No offense to clank (can I call you clank still?)) but the advanced beginners tutorials out there arent' clearly written... i was thinking asking everyone what some of their first questions were when they joined. and compile them all in a smooth clear tutorial for newbies.. and am willing to take the time to write a long extensive tutorial. Is that alright?

No offence guys but you are still pretty new to all modding.
You should be the students not the teachers.
