Right, we had a lightning storm, which (apparently) hit the house. Since then, the laptop we have (that connects wirelessly) works just like normal, but the desktop can't connect (wired), despite us having fixed it just a few days before. Also, if it's any help, the phone won't work either? Someone help

Tried changing Ethernet cables? I had one go bad not too long ago, right after a power outage during a storm.

Could also be a fried network card, though most of those these days are embedded in the mb, so I'd think there would have been other, more serious, symptoms then. If there are other network slots on the pc try those too.

Does ethernet cables get fried by lightning? I'd hate to pull up and redo my network that i spent a month on last autumn just because of a lightning bolt.

I've seen integrated network cards get fried alone so it's very possible that happened.

Ethernet cables being fried by lightning could just be an anomaly in my case, or a coincidence. However, it should always be checked since it's usually the simplest thing to check.

Luckily my internet comes from fiber these days, so the only lightning conductor at our place should be safe with the security in the fuse-boxes . Also, I think copper telephone wires are the most likely source of getting lightning into your house, so whenever you unplug your stuff for storms, you should take those cables too.
