As you guys would have heard Wikipedia and Reddit are currently in a black out as part of the protest against SOPA and PIPA.
The Wikipedia page on it.
http://en.wikipedia....tive/Learn_more
The SOPAwiki page is of course not blocked.

Wikipedia English is currently and Reddit goes down in around 4 hours.
Do you think it will make an impact?

Facebook oppose SOPA and if the Wikipedia and Reddit efforts don't work will Facebook black out their site for 24 hours?
That would definitely have an effect.

I think Wikipedia doing it will be more than enough to make the point go through. Never say never though. But I've got a feeling this bill is meeting too much resistance to be able to do anything useful before its completely rewritten.

Having sloppily written laws is like sloppily written code: easier to hack, and the "hackers" of laws are the type of people we really don't like.

I just finished reading the Wikipedia entry and it mentioned the possibility of Google and Facebook blacking out services.
My guess would be if the bill passes they will go ahead with it.

I was a little surprised that Cheezburger may also be participating.
It's a good tactic bored people become restless and anxious and more likely to act out.

Funny how much anger you can get our of breaking people's ingrained habits. There are those who critizise wikipedia for "turning their users into corporate puppets"... Well, that's what they are indirectly doing through lobbyism. This is 99% lobbyism, instead of talking to the few lawmakers, you talk to their employers. It isn't a tool as easy to use though, the 99% would get apathic if it happened every other week.

Fixed title to January.

Anyway, while SOPA has supposedly been put on the back-burners, I hope this convinces Congress that any kind of internet censorship is foolish.

Yea, SOPA isn't even being reviewed anymore. They postponed it. You know what that means? This blackout don't mean ****.

Yesh... and wait... Cheese Burger is doing it too? FOR SAM'S SAKE!!!! That was my only alternative to the Yogscast!!!!!!!!!!!!

I went to Wikipedia to look up what Firefall was... only to discover they've gone dumb. But, ha! I figured out how to use sites that blacked out! Just get your cursor ready to hit the 'stop loading, you retard' button on Wiki and the page is frozen before it can send you into the black abyss.

Do I think this is making a point? NO. It's good for awareness, but that's garbage. The only thing this is doing is punishing people.

And every friggin' time I try and open Minecraft, it just says, "PIPA and SOPA? How about Nopa!" Shut your mouth and let me have my character skin! GAHH!

The apathy and cynicism of Pasidon is under siege by the awakened people of the internet, now you have to call your local representative and give him that speech :p

SOPA has been shelved after the Obama administration said they will not support it. PIPA is still being discussed. This doesn't mean much though. Even if they hold off, all they will do is wait until everything has calmed down, try again later - possibly with a new president. Everyone needs to remain vigilant of this - this is what is required in any free society anyway. To back up this statement just google COICA 2010. Basically the same legislation as SOPA and PIPA but in 2010 - was backshelved after being blocked in the senate. This isn't going alway anytime soon.

Not that I have any faith in Obama's words. He said he was against the indefinite detention provisions of the NDAA 2012 and yet he signed it "with reservations."

Welcome to the age of increasingly fascistic legislation. These ideas are not just in the US, it won't be long till they get tried elsewhere too.

The British government has already discussed ideas of cutting entire families off from the web because of downloaders.

Tom, you cited a Daily Mail article...that's as bad as citing uncyclopedia.

I've been reading up on UK law. It has no official definition of piracy, but the general gist is that if you're doing it for financial gain or causing a substantial loss then they have a case. Which is relatively sane and fair enough.

Surveillance of the entire population is, however, not sane and fair enough. And fortunately there are enough bleeding-heart human rights campaigners out there...and that's one of those few things I'll stand with them on. Hell, the police are not even allowed to tap phones of known major organised criminals without having first attempted or thought of every other possible avenue, and we need the chief constable to sign off on it. To give ISPs or another watchdog packet-sniffing powers above and beyond those which the fucking police have would smack of bad news.

I have no idea how they plan to keep 1,000,000,000 anonymous people under taps... their funeral. People will fight back if this stuff gets passed and the government may be on the loosing side in a sea of hacks, trolls and crooks.

Yeah, vote for the people who are most likely to apply such censorship that you've just experienced :p. I bet you sit in front of the computer in full BDSM attire and shiver every time your rights gets violated :p

I think Republicans had the majority for for SOPA while barely any of them voted for PIPA with Democrats consistently favoring for both sides. But regardless, I always blame the party with the majority. The Democrats blamed Bush for everything during his reign so now blame Obama for this. I say that's fair PR... Obama caused the earthquake in Japan as well.

Thought this one was smooth too.

It seems that the ruling elite have understood that when they get the internet against them, shit happens. I wonder where Anonymous will be within ten years.

Tom Hanks is right... they'll just try to pass this stuff again when it fails, just with a different name and cause. But nothing he said seems like it would kill the porn industry... a long while back, I nearly considered supporting SOPA because it sounded like one of the targets was porn, and I would laugh for years of new at the fall of that garbage... but apparently garbage isn't in that grand scheme... so no go for Pasidon up vote.
