I have an idea...

Maybe we should stop with the game modding focus and start to go for the device. Many people create games for their mobile phones and it all uses the same methods. Why not create a place where we can learn the basics of writing simple apps and games here?

I know there are tons of places for that stuff but why not here as well? I'd suggest Android because it's open source and 70% of the market (at least in the US) we can start to poke around and learn how to make mobile web versions of a website and who knows what else.

I know I've always wanted to know more about that stuff.

A friend of mine was learning to make apps for Iphones which from memory uses C# I'm not sure about Android.
There's also other types of areas we could cover like homebrew games,Indies we could cover the gaming side of our games.
We could also work harder on promoting our projects and building stronger communities for them it worked very well for Dota.
We could support more games.
Go into Flash development which I'd be on board with helping out.

The problem with the lack of community is threefold:
1) The 'oldbies' have all grown up and found other things to do with their time. The prospect of paid employment, beer and potentially regular sex are three very good incentives to do things other than sit on the 'puter. I know I for one don't get nearly as much computer time as I used to. I generally read through the BBC articles, get my daily spin on Facebook Bejeweled Blitz, check for any new strips for my favourite web comics then close down Firefox and dive into a game for an hour or two. I sometimes click the Revora bookmark to see if there are new threads or posts, see there aren't, then click away. Generally working 60 hours every ten-day cycle leaves me with precious little time to invest in Internetting, and the time I do have to spare I generally want to spend drinking or with the missus. Or both. I think my last post here was my last post on any forum I'm registered on. And I can't be bothered to establish myself on any new ones, so I don't. :p

2) The newest members of the forum are commonly of a much younger fraternity than I, and often are as such people I cannot build a rapport with as I once did. Maybe that's my fault - my judgement and evaluation of people has changed dramatically since I joined the cops...or more accurately, my definition of what constitutes a "dickhead" has become considerably wider in scope and with different criteria, and I have (somehow) become more cynical. :p Or maybe that's just because I'm older now than I was then.

3) There appears to be little to draw new persons to the fold. Although the divisions Revora has are (or have been) largely successful, they are already established and are likely well into their decline. Without new enticements, be they a reinvigoration of the community or new faces it's obviously going to stagnate.

I don't propose to have any answers, unfortunately, though these are the real issues as to why it's stagnated here.

Well Rad, post yours in the think tank and let's see where that takes us.

You know what would be great? If we did something fun. Like... oh, I dunno... GAMING. It seems like all of our members here are shifting away from social gaming and becoming very... erm... not social about their gaming, We need to contribute something once again to the gaming world by, once again, becoming part of it. All of us need to find a game we can get into and actually PLAY, not just stare at collectively.

my judgement and evaluation of people has changed dramatically since I joined the cops...

For shame, Ash. For shame...

I personally think the android game thing would be a good thing to look into. Not to end the modding, but in addition to it.

I'd hate to agree with Pasi ( :p ), but actually getting people to actually play these mods together will probably help things. Whenever we did the (mostly TEA) bfme tournaments, they were pretty active. They dropped off, but perhaps that was due to over-saturation on my part. I can't speak for the other divisions, but T3A also may not have the number of players for something like that to work.

So we could do regular online gaming?
Sounds like a good idea so I've created a topic for gaming tags for anyone to play console games online.

We could dust off the old Hamachi rooms and try and get more regular games going.

Not I.
I'd imagine we'd all have AOE 2 and 3 and probably Warcraft 3.

Not I, either, but the FB2G mod plans to have a few open Hamachi games post-first-BETA, if we get enough people (I think the ModDB FB2G Clan's enough: 62 members).

EDIT: Actually, we could invite those who aren't on Revora but do follow the mod to join, and contribute to Revora.

Also, I think one thing we could do to revitalize Revora is to rid ourselves of the 2-3 post New Members and Confirming Email who've been inactive for more than a year. And their posts, maybe, but that could be a tad too far.

Don't think playing games together more is going to increase activity in the forums. There's also already a thread for tags like that, although a group in Steam would have been okay I guess.

Oh, we can do that? Cool. I can experiment with that later tonight, if I'm not too busy or pretending I'm busy while playing Orcs Must Die 2.

Hey, I make pictures. Say cool stuff about me now.

But yea, I feel just making this Steam group is a bit of progress for us. We just got to get motivated enough to get into the social mood and the competitive one.
