I think a small , fast and manouevrable ballista can be a good choice for the Dúnedain . It is the kind of siege weapon perfect for fast skirmishes and can be used to destroy wooden structures . Plus if it is small it can move faster , still shoot less farther than a trebuchet and does less damages against stone structures , but good against units and wooden buildings or fences .

From the ashes a fire shall be woken, A light from the shadows shall spring; Renewed shall be blade that was broken, The crownless again shall be king.[1]

I think it actually would be a further shot than a trebuchet, as it's a buildup of pressure in a single direction, so it would have a smaller arc but travel further. Trebuchets would use a slingshot style, creating a massive arc with a shorter length, maximizing on damage more than accuracy.

I've always thought that trebs in bfme are way underscaled.
And a treb should fire further than a ballista- I've seen them both firing side by side at Caerphilly
