This is my documented build of "Project Siphous"

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Alrighty then, update on Project Siphous!

I got my case and fans I need, so I assembled the shell of the system with the liquid cooling setup in place, but not yet connected.

This is the case with my new fans installed in configuration.

I have a 140mm in the back, and three 120mm in the front in an altered configuration, I'll explain why later.

Spoiler

Spoiler

Spoiler

Here you see I have put the plugs onto the radiators in the spots I wont use. I have also installed the fittings and the fans onto them each. They use 120mm Static Pressure fans to maximize the pressure passing through the radiators.

*note* Static pressure fans are better for passing air through obstructed areas such as radiators, or hard drive enclosures.

Spoiler

This is the setup with the radiators installed. You can see that the one internal fan on the front is mounted on the inside. If you reference the second image you can see that I have two Static Pressure fans on the top and bottom, and one high Air Flow fan in the center. The top area is obstructed by the hard drive bays, and the bottom fan is obstructed by the bottom radiator. So the center fan is a Air Flow fan to maximize efficiency.

Spoiler

I mounted the light strips behind the top and bottom radiators so they are out of sight, and won't give overpowering light.

Spoiler

Spoiler

This is the beginning of the cable management. For now it is just how the light strips are setup. With this case I have almost an inch of clearance in the back so cable management will be very easy.

Spoiler

I mounted my Reservoir, pump, and the necessary fittings. I haven't yet run any tubing, that will wait until after the motherboard is installed so it is not in my way.

Spoiler

Spoiler

Well that's all for now! Next I will be getting the good stuff, like the board, processor and video cards! I will go over the process of removing the stock cooler on the cards, and installing the water block onto them.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------

Not much of an update, but it's something.

I found out that I had my pump incorrectly aligned, so I slightly adjusted it. Then i ran the basic tubing that would not interfere with the installation of additional hardware.

I have salvaged two of the fans, the front 120mm and the rear 140mm because the fans in my current PC shit the bed on me. New ones are in the mail.

Spoiler

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------

Things have been going slowly recently, mainly because I have been biding my time for the remaining components. I'm trying to not make the same mistake I did last time where as soon as I make my purchase a new product puts mine to shame. While that will never be entirely the case since new things are always coming out, I decided to hold off until a few key components are available.

I have pre-ordered an i7 4790K "Devil's Canyon" which should ship out on the 25th of this month, and I am patiently waiting for the release of the Asus Maximus VII Formula, which was revealed at Computex, but the only word on release date is "sometime in July".

But I have still managed to get some things done, which I will explain.

First of all, I re-acquired the fans I salvaged. Then I decided to move my bottom radiator to the front, and remove the hard drive cages. I will be mounting one 4TB drive in my bottom 5.25" bay, and two more in the back side behind the motherboard, completely out of view. My reasoning behind this is because of the PSU I bought, Corsair AX1200i. It is too big to have installed with a bottom mounted radiator, note the picture below. So I opted for front mounted radiator and run four fans on it in push/pull configuration to ease the effort required to pull air through the front of the case which has slightly restricted airflow.

Spoiler

I installed my pump regulator/fan controller as well as a 5.25" to 3.5" adapter in the bottom bay. (It will be concealed)

Spoiler

I installed two Samsung 840 Pro 256GB SSDs which will be my primary OS and core programs drives, they will be configured in Raid 0.

Spoiler

Finally you can see that all of this still remains nice and pretty looking!! Note that the third bay will not show the internally mounted HDD at all because I can still mount the front piece over it.

Spoiler

That's all for now, it's going slowly until I have more funds, and the motherboard gets released. Then there will be more fun!

-----------------------------------------------------------------

Today some fun was had.

The board I purchased came in, so I set about doing a test bench setup to verify everything was in order.

Asus Maximus VII Formula

Intel core i7 4790k

Corsair AX1200i

Spoiler

I had an issue with the heat transfer from the stock cooler so I decided to throw my armageddon on there to test further.

Spoiler

My next decision, was even though I'm not yet prepared to assemble the full water loop, I need the money from my old system. So I decided to build the system as is on air in the meantime, so that I can sell my old rig for the money I need to finish the water loop. Needless to say, I am not disappointed one bit. I routed the custom sleeved cables through the system (the back is a bloody mess right now and I will neaten it up when I am doing the water conversion anyways so I won't show that area.)

Behold, the awesome power!

Get SSD disk for OS. One thing is having a quick disk that loads your games quickly, another is that if you only got one disk you'll lose both stored items and the OS if it crashes.

MSI. Yuck. ASRock, EVGA and Gigabyte are the way to go. Seen a few too many MSI boards just bomb out of nowhere. Might just be bad luck but I don't have a lot of faith in MSI motherboards.

Also, get an i5 instead of an i7. I doubt you'll be doing that much to warrant that much power. Save $120 or so. I currently have an i5 2400 and it hasn't let me down yet. I can pop on an HD video then play Borderlands 2 while running a VM on full speed. All without slowing down at all.

Snag a GTX670 instead of a 680. You'll save some cash and get more than enough power. I know for a fact it will play Battlefield 3 on high without skipping a beat.

Oh, when you buy the RAM, get solo sticks or in packs of two. I got the same pack, or something similar, then had one go bad. They wanted the entire set to replace one bad module and I was not about to send back three known working sticks and be without my PC for two fucking weeks over one dead module. Might want to keep that in mind for the future.

[EDIT] That PSU is a good choice, but you could probably go with a 650W unit. I recommend the Seasonic X650 Gold, which is the same thing I have. It's $50 off at Newegg right now so you'll save some cash here too. Though, really, that Corsair is not a bad choice by any means.

Well price is no real option for me, only how long it takes to get. I'm wanting to stick with the i7 because I'm planning on tri-monitor setup with quite a lot of processes running. As for the PSU, I'm anticipating SLI down the road in not too long, so I don't want to have a PSU that isn't up to par with that. Last thing I want is to spend this kind of money and find myself bottle necking somewhere.

As for the motherboard, I'm stepping up a notch, also going with a red scheme.

So, Mobo: ASUS Maximus V EXTREME

Case: Antec DF-85 Black Steel / Plastic ATX Full Tower
http://www.newegg.co...N82E16811129087

Swapped the case both for the color, and for the external drive bays, I'm sure to use those.

Alrighty, so I no longer give any fucks how much I spend on this, and since my car payment is done I have about $400 every other week free to spend on this monster I'm trying to achieve.

Basically, my overall plan is to have an SLI setup, and as much processing power as I can get for a gaming (and not server of course) setup.

So, basically this is the current lineup.

[----- Intel Build -----]

Hard Drive: $110
http://www.newegg.co...N82E16822136533

SSD: $200
http://www.newegg.co...N82E16820239046

RAM: $88
http://www.newegg.co...N82E16820231429

Motherboard: $380
http://www.newegg.co...N82E16813131858

Processor: $340
http://www.newegg.co...N82E16819116501

Power Supply: $185
http://www.newegg.co...N82E16817171049

Case: $140
http://www.newegg.co...N82E16811129087

Heatsink/Fan: $30
http://www.newegg.co...N82E16835103065

Graphics: $550+ WOW (Optional/later)
http://www.newegg.co...N82E16814130794

Monitor: $470 (Actually plan on buying two but for now one)
http://www.newegg.co...N82E16824014270

Total estimated price:

Without GPU: $1943
With GPU: $2493

------------------------------------------------

Indented items have already been purchased (while I was still making payments), so the larger items will still roll in in roughly the same amount of time regardless.

My only immediate concern, is the i7 3770 the best intel quad-core out right now? What happened to the hyper-threaded ones that simulated 8 cores? --- Edit: Wait, as I read I see that the Ivy Bridge does have Hyper-Threading technology. I'm actually considering this monster. http://www.newegg.co...N82E16819116492 , but if I do that I have to change the mobo to a 2011.

I shit you not I want a machine that will make my PC gamer friends literally nerdgasm at the sight of my power.

Your heat sync's fan is obnoxiously large.  Good work.  Now we should throw our rigs at each other and see which one wins.

I chose that fan because A: It's quiet and it has very high airflow. and B: because it fits well with my build.

Combine those two, cannot go wrong :p I'll review further in a few months after steady usage but for now, no complaints.

Well, the computer bug has bit me again, and it's time for an upgrade.. of sorts.

I'm going to periodically switch to current gen hardware since I just so happened to build this immediately prior to the release of the new stuff, which has immediately rendered my build "obsolete". I am not planning to do a full rebuild or go balls-to-the-wall right off the bat, however it will be a progression.

The first step in this process, is that I am upgrading to liquid cooling.

This is the cooler I will use with the CPU.

http://www.newegg.co...N82E16835181032

I plan on setting up clear tubing with Mayhem red dye applied to the coolant, as well as lining a pair of 12 inch UV cold-cathodes to glow my tubing to compliment the rig.

After I have this setup complete, I am selling my graphics card to someone at work for $450, and instead picking up:

http://www.evga.com/...=03G-P4-3789-KR

With which I will do the same for the coolant tubes.

Edit--

I know it's silly to upgrade to 700 series graphics so quickly, since mine is still top tier as is. The reason I'm doing it is because I know people here that I can trade with and make deals, so the upgrade isn't too much out of pocket. And I also discovered that there is only one aftermarket liquid cooling block available for my specific card, and it received very poor reviews, so I would be stuck at running a card that runs at 80c under a load, yuck. (Only because I'm too spoiled to keep it at stock speeds.)

I'll switch to 800 series when that is released, since the 700 series isn't a drastic improvement all in all, however the switch to liquid cooling is.

So all in all, the upgrade will cost roughly $500-600 tops, but with a combination of the improved GPU and liquid cooled system, I will be able to almost double my performance, without even bothering to upgrade the board or CPU just yet.

Heh... I find it easy to justify these things, when other people I work with like to take out loans and spend 10 grand on cars just on a whim. All of a sudden a $500-600 PC upgrade doesn't seem so bad.

I'm only afraid to buy the Titan, because as I see it, it's a gimmick card. The 700 series isn't a new card entirely, just an improvement over the 600 series. The Titan, is a new generation chipset. They released it so as to draw out excess sales. I suspect that there will be more cards released with the same chipset as the Titan, so I wonder if it's worth it to drop down that sort of cash when the Titan only really has innovation as its strong point.

That is the main reason I plan to buy a 780, it's still quite expensive yes, but it's more mainstream and easier to wheel-and-deal with in the future when I look to move up to the next step of card.
