Lately Ive been on a kick with updating my maps in the realm of Gondor. I always feel like I sell myself short in order to push out the map rather than really push for what I envisioned. Ive been watching way too much 3rd age total war lately and one thing I really enjoyed is the Osgiliath map in that mod, it really feels like its in Gondor, has its architecture etc....In my original map I used the Cirith ungol walls to surround the city. I ended up with the city being "off center" of the map (which bothers me) and these squarish walls that dont say "Gondor" to me at all. Ive seen a few hand drawn maps of osgiliath that have "half moon" shaped walls surrounding the city on either side of the Anduin river, while its not film accurate it does make sense to me,

With the above outer wall in mind, Ive gone through and begun to change the walls to a destroyed version using ruined pieces. Ive centered the walls appropriately and theres now land on either side (north and south) with which to land troops to perform flanking and attacking of resource buildings built outside the city behind your actual fortress locations. one thing that concerns me is object count. since Im already at 5100+ and I wanna remove all the premade buildings in favor of placing ore of the created ruined ones.

Here is the west bank of Osgiliath in progress

Don't forget this was once the capital of Gondor, there should be more ruins of houses and stuff in it, other than that it looks lovely.

Those ruins look fantastic!

Thanks for the comments.

Im retexturing the entire area outside the city on the eastern bank. I want something that reflects desolation and ruin while still being alive and natural looking. I cant help thinking of all the dead trees, dried grass and pine needles on the ground at the end of the Two towers when Frodo, Sam and Gollum make their way from Osgiliath.

NJM, did you do some of the maps for the RJ mod? I remember seeing something that looks like your username at the end of the map descriptions.

Anyways, this map looks like it will be a freaking blast to play.

Maybe I should re-do Osgiliath for Horse Lords later on, But for the outside i would think it would have the dead pine trees around the direction frodo and sam left, other than that some grass and a few small trees could cut it.

I am the same NJM who donated maps to RJ, Osgiliath was among those. Im hoping the improvements will make the map better to play on.

I havent added or changed any of the trees just yet, the portion Ive worked on is the south eastern side, I plan to put the trees and pine needle textures on that portion. :thumbsupcool:

Some branches do look a bit bright, but that's more because the tree is dead than anything else.

I use the term shiny to describe things aesthetically pleasing. Not literally shiny. I should rethink my life now.

Ive been considering breaking the main large bridge on the map, taking out a section or 2 and then putting rubble in the water. I was planning to do this on the western side. However I would like to get thoughts on this....
