I've searched the forum and read through the guide, but I haven't found a description of the Politician skill (e.g. Jerjerrod).  What bonus(es) does this provide?

If memory serves, politician reduces the time it take for a conquered planet to begin producing its full potential of credits... or i could be wrong

If I'm not mistaken it is a type of leader, some are soldiers, politicians, etc. He'll be more likely to have bonuses in diplomacy, motivation and such skills; but if any kind of specific bonuses are attached to a character only for being a politician I could not say. To be honest my duties in testing the mod go in different areas but not that one, sorry I couldn't clarify that a bit more...

skie is correct: it is an indicator for Political_Transition_Bonus_Ability, a presumed remnant of the scrapped diplomacy system that affects how quickly the post-transition strife credit penalty is reduced to zero.  Any similarities between heroes with Politician skills are purely coincidental.  Skills are merely an indication of one's own ability to perform a certain job, opposed to the ways in which they inspire others.

Is there any way to actually bring a real diplomacy system to the game, or is that another pipe dream ?

According to Petroglyph, it was abandoned early on and never completed.  There really is no practical way to attempt such a system without rewriting parts of the engine.

Is there any method to rewrite the engine ?

It's been done, to an extent, for other games of similar age, so worth asking I suppose.

1. I believe that's technically illegal, and definitely a gross violation of the EULA regardless.

2. Nearly impossible without the source.

Depends how you do it.

A few mods for other games have managed it, legally too.

I believe the main issue is with redistributing the executable, so if you were to instead distribute a file that somehow modified the executable, that may be permissible.  I don't know how you would be able to do that without decompiling the executable though (short of being very proficient at assembly programming), which is another legal matter.

That's pretty much how the Fleetops mod for Armada 2 does it, when it installs it renames Armada2.exe to Armada2.ldl, and won't work without it or something.

I don't really know past that.

That said the results are deffinitly worth it, in the case of that mod it looks like the actual game is the (VERY poor quality) mod while the mod is the production game.
