I think either Super Mario 64 or Banjo-Kazooie. Mario was definitely earlier, but I can't remember if I actually defeated the final Bowser. Sure didn't collect all 120 stars though.

It's never too late to repent to the true master of the triforce.
Banjo-Kazooie would be an interesting first game to beat. I remember it being as hard as nails. Probably not as much today, with the whole internet thing, and not being as dumb.
