I'd like my dogs to guard and stay in one place and not wonder off or run away.
I can't get it to work inMO3. Is it supposed to work? How?

Well for Repair Stingers and Repair IFV's you need G to have them automatically repair friendly units, so I guess it does work for that

I think what you actually mean there is Area Guard and not the standard Guard which might not have a default keyboard button.

"G" for Guard is the default in the game. Doesn't appear to work though.
What is 'area guard' and how do you enable it?

That's patrol mode. Area Guard is something totally different and available only through map/AI triggers.
