So I was very skeptical about getting this game because it seemed very over-hyped. I read many early reviews that confirmed my suspicions. The game was/is to some too much like Call of Duty and not nearly as "genre defining" as it had been claimed to be. It also contains dated graphics and the game play while being unique for a FPS isn't something that hasn't been seen before.
I bit the bullet and bought it anyways because of curiosity and other friends having purchased it already.
I have played enough now to form my own opinion on the game.
For one, with this style of combat I REALLY wanted a single player campaign. The "campaign" is a series of Matchmaking multiplayer games with a standard deathmatch mode that follows a series of maps in chronological order. You play as the IMC first (the formal military faction), then repeat the same maps as the Militia.
It is alright considering it gives you fast levels and it has generally speaking newer players and a less competitive match to learn the game in, but I would have rather had a story line with which I could run around and go ape shit without being ganked by players all the time.
The graphics I really do not have any issue with. At all. Many people were gnawing their teeth because this "next gen game" features graphics in the fidelity which has been present since 2010 or even earlier. However when playing there is absolutely nothing making me stop and look around saying to myself "oh these graphics are terrible!". There is not a single thing that I would even call cringe-worthy.
The animations are very nice, especially when interacting with the Titans be them yours, your allies' or even your foes'. Audio is pretty immersive though I still don't care for the weapon sounds, they do sound a tad on the cheesy side. Which seems to be incredibly common with modern FPS games. Why can't they just record the sounds of actual gunfire?
Now the game play itself, is very fast paced. After putting in around 150 hours into Battlefield 4, I found it hard to jump in and go with the speed of the combat. Lots of people use this reference most when claiming that it feels like Call of Duty, and normally I would agree, however. The incredible usefulness of the parkour elements and the very interactive Titans (even combining the two into building scaling, roof leaping free falls onto an enemy Titan only to sabotage it from the top and slaughter the Pilot...) make for a game play that is fast, but it provides for many more options on how to go about your strategy to overtake your enemies or objectives.
All things considered, this game is very good. Is it everything they hyped it up to be? No. But it is worth my money and time, and I will surely play quite a few hours of the game.
I would rate it on a personal scale 7.5/10
Anyone else play the game and have any opinions on it?
