I've noticed capitol ships appear at different altitudes in space, and was curious how many layers exist to be used ?

Without looking into the files I'd say Corvette, Frigate, Capital, SuperCapital and StaticObject.

I'm not a 100% sure but the layer doesn't primarily determine the altitute of a ship. If two objects share the same layer, from the pathfinding perspective they might collide and so will evade each other. It's therefore more of a tag for pathfinding.

The height of a ship can be set by <Layer_Z_Adjust>, no matter what layer a ship uses. If any...

I was mostly thinking along the lines of tweaking layers by size, so as to assist with pathfinding a bit more.

Also, on ground maps, what options are there with layers, as it could possibly be used for repulsor craft to cheat with the poor pathing the engine offers, as currently even a group of infantry will cause LAATs to get stuck.
(yes, I know LAATs are not a major unit outside of Chih's sub-mod of PR, the principle remains the same however).

Also, depending on the layer options on ground maps, as well as what options exist for setting range by layer as well as affecting what layers a unit can attack, this could be used to bring snubcraft onto ground maps.

Basically, I'd rather play in a way that actually feels like starwars, because if we could properly layer stuff, all of those transports we have in space could be brought into ground maps and actually serve their stated purpose of transporting troops.
