So as you've probably heard the Hobby Lobby Supreme court case which ruled 5-4 in favour of businesses restricting access to Contraceptive coverage for employees under the Affordable Care act if it conflicts with a Business' religious beliefs.

While seemingly minor it sets up a rather big precedent for the rights of businesses which now apparently have religious rights they can inflict on employees.

The separation of Church and State has taken a bit of a beating under the current Supreme Court.

NPR Article

Ruth Bader-Ginsberg - Link

In response, Ruth writes, “The exemption sought by Hobby Lobby and Conestoga would…deny legions of women who do not hold their employers’ beliefs access to contraceptive coverage...In a decision of startling breadth, the Court holds that commercial enterprises, including corporations, along with partnerships and sole proprietorships, can opt out of any law (saving only tax laws) they judge incompatible with their sincerely held religious beliefs." She said she feared that with its decision, the court had "ventured into a minefield."  She also claims, "It bears note in this regard that the cost of an IUD is nearly equivalent to a month's full-time pay for workers earning the minimum wage."

Yep, this is some awful stuff.

I like how a supposedly learned institution like the Supreme Court doesn't seem to realize that the pill is not just a contraceptive, but an often-prescribed medicine for a lot of medical issues.

The separation of Church and State has taken a bit of a beating under the current Supreme Court.

The amount of influence the church is allowed to have in these matters is still governed by the state, since the church is not above the law. The Supreme Court is also just applying the law.

The law apparently says that this is what, sadly, the majority of the democracy finds appropriate. The only real solution is to educate/enlighten those people, at least until they're no longer a majority.

Or, you know, violent revolution :p

Shit like this makes me wonder where "teh reel paytreeuts" spout off that America so goddamn free and open. No universal health care, deplorable mental health care, a two party system, religion is still infecting policy, people still in office who think war is just dandy and who don't understand reality for regular people, no gay marriage... and, well fuck, I could keep going but it's depressing. I just don't get it sometimes. And decisions like this don't help. Especially since... you know... it's bullshit on a scale higher than your average corn-filled log.

Don't forget Gerrymandering and no term limits for Senators so you have fossils who are pretty much guaranteed to keep their jobs till they die.

How long till a company refuses paying tax due to religious conflicts I wonder.

Usually just when it's included elsewhere, but yes, it/he's good, so I should probably subscribe on YouTube.
