Have you ever asked: "Why make low-tier units when there are higher-tier units available" or "why make higher-tier units when I can just mass low-tier ones"? The following 7-part article takes you behind the scenes into the thinking process that goes on when developing a good RTS game. It's quite a long read but well worth it (if you haven't already done so), particularly if you are a MentalMeister.

Not sure if this has already been linked here as I haven't visited here for a while, but here's another good read (if you have the time) by Wayward Strategist. He has some pretty interesting insights on old, new and upcoming RTS games, map making, balance, resource, strategies, and pretty much every topic related to the RTS genre.
