... right. Anyway, about the printer...

after looking at the specs, that's not bad. All the ones I was looking at earlier this year were in the £1,000-£2,000 bracket.

On the other hand, the fact that all the images in the promos are renders is slightly disillusioning and might say something about their confidence.

Pretty much, I have been looking into 3D printers as well. Primarily RepRap and Kit based Printers.

I really hope that they deliver on their promises. :)

That RepRap thing is so cool. The whole self-replication... it's slightly quirkily awesome.

Let me know how it goes. I cannot afford it at the moment. But I do plan on picking one of these up.

I wouldn't even know what to do with one.  "Doy, Pasi'doofus... print 3D stuff!"  Shut up... what I mean is that I have nothing 3D I really need printed.  Or want. Maybe a model of a moose.  I always wanted a moose to put on my desk.

Also, while still in the making, this is an intriguing concept: http://www.peachyprinter.com/

3D printers are stupid. Until you can print something legitimately practical with a decent time frame and minimal cost, then maybe it will be worth it. Right now all it can do is print static plastic objects. Which can be useful in many situations, but it is hardly revolutionary, it is just a different method of manufacturing the same thing that can be bought for very cheap prices with good research. It isn't cost effective, it's just a toy.

However the 3D printers that can manufacture metal objects, and even carbon-based objects. Now THOSE are awesome. But alas, if you're talking about affordable 3D printers, you'll get a shoddy piece capable of printing only basic plastic pieces with questionable integrity.

Someone I work with has one, and I've seen nothing genuinely useful come of it, other than petty plastic figures, holder, or neat shapes. Worth the money? I say no.

I disagree, as someone who works on both digital and small-scale real-world models. Indeed, your argument could be used to say the same of art in general, as it's not by your definition "something legitimately practical".

Nah, that's just misunderstanding Kwen, and stretching that misunderstood reasoning to huge lengths in an attempt to discredit it. He just said that the current line of affordable 3d printers aren't practical to him. That has nothing to do with the value of art. That's like saying I don't value art because I dislike the latest line of Boss electric gardening shears (which could very well be used to create garden sculptures!). :p

I mostly agree with Kwen, in that a 3d printer wouldn't serve a purpose in creating anything that contributes to my artwork or anything else I'd like to do, buuut those real-deal expensive ones he mentioned would. I'd print some sweet stuff with those.

Not so much as an attempt to discredit him as a challenge to the principle, but I see what you mean. Fair enough then; as you were, all.

A 3D pen???  Uhh... sure, sure.  To be fair, a 2D pen would be more impressive.
