Why is it necessary to install the launcher?

I was able to use alternative servers just by changing an entry in a config file.

 

is this just a neat user interface for people who are overstrained by notepad or is there any other activity we should be aware of?

What file do you edit? If thats all it takes, then make an installer to update the text file-- super easy!

Yes the launcher is necessary.  You cannot avoid the EA authentication (which will fail) in most of the games merely by redirecting the IP addresses.   You have to reconfigure where the authentication goes once the executable is loaded into memory.
