If you saw the trailer, you'd seen that dwarves ride on goats, and use a goat-wagon. Atleast, I think the wagon had goats dragging it..

So now the battle wagon will need the great beast swapped with a ram. The use of a ram isn't bad. They are generally indigenous to mountain terrain and the dwarves being mountain dwelling would have access to them. Even if it is stretching the lore.

Stretching? There's no mention of dwarves riding anything but ponies, and then only for non-combat. No, this is 100% outside the lore. Hell, the dwarves from the Iron Hills had mattocks, and also carried a short broad sword with a round shield. They didn't have spears.

Still, the thing that bothers me a bit is the dwarven armour. I mean, 171 years is a long time to develop the armour. But no, these guys wear the same armour they did 171 years ago. Don't know much about the history of armour, but I would've least hoped for some shiny new armour.

Yeah. I'm aware that there is no mention. There was no mention of thranduil riding that moose/deer. But there is a bit logic behind the concept as well. I didn't say I liked it. For some reason I feel like this is left overs from del toro. If dwarves can ride ponies then they can ride rams. Maybe they are some sort of shock troop. There may very well be the arms you described among the ranks of the Dwarven troops. Let's wait and see.

But I wanna see the Mattocks. =\

I envision this:

Iron Hills commander: Thorin king stands alone.

Dain: No alone. Dwarfhirrim! To the king!

I like the rams too, but I'm well known for pretty much "accepting" everything that PJ does with the lore, even though I might not like it, at first. Like the concept of Azog, that felt more like an uruk than a traditional orc... Anyways, yeah I'll model that ram when I have better pictures of it, and hopefully we can rig it to the Beast SKL =)

Just watch out, it may turn out that the ram cavalry are from the Grey Mountains, judging by the tapestry of the line of Durin which WETA has released. And Azog is thought to be a lot closer to the Elves which were first corrupted into orcs... Like a "pure-blooded" orc.

Wouldn't make any sense if they came from the Grey Mountains, but PJ's made stupid calls before.

You know, like the one that includes Azog being alive.

Really? Ered Mithrin is one of the Seven Dwarf kingdoms the Arkenstone is supposed to unite. See here: http://www.thelandof...inTapestry2.jpg

And Dain is said to ride a wild boar... And there've been scenes shot with Iron Hills infantry.

I just can't really see you being able to train a ram. I mean sheep are stupid creatures and rams are males so are really defiant. Who knows? Maybe if they have an actual living ram in a scene they could prove me wrong...

Also, what do you reckon is the top speed on any sheep/ram? :p

Sheep are pretty damn fast.

And good call, Bofur. From that tapestry, it does look like Thorin and co. might contact both the Grey Mountains and the Iron Hills. There has been quite some talk of the dwarf kingdoms in these films so far.

Regardless of who's riding the rams (funny name btw, as it's the same as battering ram ^^ )... am I the only one that think those riders seem to wear Erebor looking armor? I really hope PJ didn't decide to let all dwarf kingdoms wear the same type of armor. That would be pretty redundant =/

Search "Iron Hills hobbit" on Goolge images, and you'll see they're a bit different.

Ugh, I really hate the direction of the new trilogy. Peter Jackson has officially become the new George Lucas.

Sorry :p . I'm just so disappointed in the Hobbit. Now, to make this a bit on topic: I don't really think adding the battle-rams is great idea. They just look ridiculous. This isn't Narnia.

Another stupid addition those rams. Dwarves are said to have no empathy with animals, to be disliked be them in fact. That's why they don't ride ponys to battle. Besides the fact that rams are rightly considered wild animals for a very good reason, try to get a child to ride one and see what happens.

I agree with Mordor Slayer, this isn't Narnia  (nor World of Warcraft!).
