Forget screens, imagine a camera. It has a lens, which has a sensor (square shaped, looks like a shiny card) behind it. You can either split that up many times, giving more small megapixels, or split it up fewer times, giving fewer, larger pixels. The physical pixels are larger, and so let in more light. So there's a trade off between light and the detail of the image. There's no point in having a really detailed image if there's no light in it, and vice versa.

And yes, in a screen, more pixels are better. I think that's where you're getting confused. Think of the physical pixels in the camera sensor And the fact that those you asked didn't understand this shows how the "megapixel war" is taking hold of marketing.
