I've been wanting to make my own mod now for a while but I've never had that push to actually sit down and start working on it until now. I started a topic here about a year ago when I was a noob (my 1st year on Revora is fast approaching) but that went down like a lead balloon which is no surprise considering how noobish and unconvincing I sounded not to mention I probably hadn't really much to show.

Anyway it's literally been just this past week that I finally put all my past year of trying, troubleshooting and (slowly) learning to good use and actually did some proper modding. I'm not putting this in the mod recruitment subforum yet because I'm not actually calling this an official mod yet, its just a little post to say I'm actually doing something and I'll be posting new stuff every now and again to make sure I'm doing it right.

So, this is what my past week has generated...

It's all art stuff that I have to show at the minute. Coding is probably my weakest point.

The apts are all recoloured I just have some in-game screenshotting problems.

For all the pros and old modders out there I'd really love some constructive criticism, I know I hardly have to ask for it though. :p

Interesting, looks fairly good so far, maybe with the palantir images the falloff is a bit too sudden?

Out of interest, do you have yet any one direction in which to take this mod?

Yeah I'd forgotten about reducing the opacity of the eraser.  :smilehuh:

There's no solid plan at the minute but I suppose I've always had an idea but the course I would it hope it might follow. It would more or less just be an expansion on what's already in the game without the introduction of any completely new systems. It won't be a themed mod or conversion either, that's for sure. A bit of rebalancing, new units and buildings to every faction, additional heroes to every faction, split Gondor + Rohan, split elves (Rohvanion/Eriador), Arnor (may be heavily edited), complete remake of Angmar and a new take on Dwarves more centred around The Hobbit.  Oh and no new campaign, infact I'm not even sure about new maps at this stage.

I know a lot of this just sounds like ground already covered by other mods (Edain + RJ especially), but I hope to implement a unique twist of some form - I'm not sure what it will be yet - into the mod in some way. Of course that's only if I actually open this mod up to full scale development...

I used to be in your shoes, wasn't sure exactly what I wanted to do. Or how to do it. Then I learned the code but I was never good at the arty things. My recommendation is to practice your artwork and models and the better you get the better you can support yourself and your mod.

You wont find many "team members" nowadays but if you can do it all on your own then that's incredible. :p

Trust me when I say start small. Don't try and just jump in and do all the factions at once. Some people say working 2 factions at once is good because then you don't get bored. For me? I was never able to do that. In total I probably made somewhere between 5-10 whole factions using so many different models (most of which are bogus). I didn't have a solid plan and I ended up falling off because of a bug I just couldn't fix. Now? I have a solid plan and even have a release. :) Start with something as basic as Rohan and move up to whole factions like a completely redone Angmar.

Just my 2 cents though. Anyways Ill keep an eye on this. Looks interesting. :D

Or on the other hand keep up just doing the things you are doing and see how it goes. If you're working alone I dont see a problem with that.

Yeah I'm predicting that I might waver away from my original path over time. Originally I was going to take it a faction at a time but I realise now that yeah that probably would get pretty boring and repetitive. For now I'll maybe start off with doing one piece of work in every area of one particular faction and then see what's easy and what I'm not so good at. That'll give me a better understanding of how a fully fledged mod works and from there I'll go on to apply my new found knowledge across different factions.

Also, Rider of Rohan very kindly offered out of nowhere to spruce up my alatar skin a bit and did a brilliant job on it.

I know this is a double post but I'm just updating the thread with some of Mathijs' work which he too kindly offered to do. This is Pallando (well I don't really know which one) but anyway I'm very pleased with him also.

I also made a new hero who I've decided will be the mod's interpretation of Damrod, it's my first model which I'd actually think about presenting in a proper mod.  :p

Brilliant wizard, I love the style.

As for Damrod, any particular reason for him having black clothes? I assume he's not a ranger, because black clothes are really only useful during the night for camouflage..

I'm actually changing him to become Captain Carthean after realising that the game already has a pretty decent Damrod. I think as a captain the black suits him more than just a standard ranger, as a decoration of his service sort of thing.

Note though that BFME 2's Damrod skin is used for the Captain of Dale hero guy in RotWK.

Ok well in that case then he'll just remain as nondescript ranger hero. I'll find a place for him.
