Nice! Welcome back and happy modding.

#897167 The Death Of Revora

Posted by Phil on 18 August 2012 - 06:43 AM

How nice to see that some people use proper etiquette when criticising others. "You fucked it all up" and "it sounds retarded" really contributes to a good discussion  Thanks for that.

I do believe reorganising some forums is probably in order. I also realise that moving the community part down was a bad idea. I'm not sure if we should really compress it as much as Mathijs suggested though. We could probably discard all the Community sub-subforums though so that we're only left with Open Topic, Art & Design, Media, Tech Talk and Think Tank. Merging them further just makes it very hard to navigate the forums and find the topics you're looking for, IMO. The other issue is that merging forums is easy, but we'll never be able to properly split them up again once they're merged (because you'd have to sort out and move all the topics by hand).

My current suggestion would be:

Revora
- Revora News
- Network Questions, Feedback (needs better name)
-- Hosting Support
-- Jobs

Community
- General Discussion (ex Open Topic)
- Art & Design
- Media (Games, Movies, Music, Books)
- Role-Playing Games (?)
- Tech Talk
- The Think Tank
-- Games Nations Play

Network
as is

I've just finished watching Drive. Excellent film, in my opinion. It's a neo-noir that replaces most dialogue with powerful images. The protagonist hardly talks at all. The real attraction, however, is the epic soundtrack of 80s-style synthpop and how the sound is combined with the visuals.

#892237 Appeal to the actual BfME players

Posted by Phil on 27 June 2012 - 10:54 PM

We're more like Amateurs who try to make professional quality work.
In terms of approach over the last year or so I think the bulk of the active mods have changed a bit and started treating their respective projects more professionally in terms of overall quality and marketing.

I don't want to hurt anyone's feelings, but the trying part is pretty much as far as professional quality goes here.
If you compare our mods to actual "professional quality" work, i.e. real video games, you'll find there are worlds in between. Quality? Hardly any big mod here ever reaches a true version 1.0. Marketing? The most we do is ModDB and Facebook pages.

None of this is a problem though, because we don't have to please a broad audience or make it a commercial success. Modding is a hobby and should be fun first and foremost. Creating a mod is about expressing your own creativity. It's true that the average quality of work in this community has improved a lot over the years, but saying we aim for professional quality work is rather pretentious. We're all amateurs and that's just the way it should be, in my opinion.

#884064 Help Wanted!

I can help out with translations every now and then, but don't want to commit myself too much as I have lots of other stuff to take care of.

#878810 Celebration topic

Posted by Phil on 08 March 2012 - 10:35 PM

I celebrate having returned to T3A and to BFME modding after almost two years!

That's right, Manveru's back. You can't get rid of me that easily.

I dare say it's the other way around. You can't get rid of Revora that easily. For once you join, it devours your soul and never sets it free again...

Also, welcome back :p

#877940 Obama

[vid]

This video caught my eye. It was made by people who like to find little conspiracies in everything that I typically don't listen to, but they show actual footage of Obama's speeches of him saying things I've never heard before that do seem.... well, just watch the video. I don't claim to support hating on Muslims and assuming they're all terrorists, but I do want to know if my president has Muslim roots. Why? Because that's rather important. If he was an admitted Muslim, he would never be elected president. Why? It's a Christian / Catholic country. We have ideals and principles set appart from certain religions that very much differ from the Muslim world, and we would like to keep it that way, especially since we are at war with Islamic supremacists.

Some things in the video are taken out of context, like the last bit with 9/11 footage... just ignore that since it has nothing to do with anything in this video. But anyway... I ultimately can't find any opinions to muster from this, but I'm curious to gather others.

1. Who gives a shit? He's probably an atheist/agnostic anyway, but has to pretend he's a Christian because your country values primitive tribalism higher than sane ideas.

2. Even if he were a Muslim, how does that make him any different? You pretend you're not hating on Muslims, yet you wish to know if he's one because the bias in your country wouldn't have let him be elected.

3. Even if he were a Muslim and lied about it, who gives a shit? Politicians lie all the time and lying about if you follow one old book instead of another is hardly the worst there has been in history.

4. I keep hearing "it's a Christian country". Really? What part of the Christian message do you follow? "Do unto others what you would have them do to you"? "Love your neighbor as yourself"?

5. That video is the worst piece of "evidence" I've ever seen. Random 3-second clips glued together in a very suggestive way. The only thing it proves is that Obama is a very slick speaker and manages to make every audience connect to him in a way. He's definitely good with words (much less so with actions).

I will never understand American politics.

At what point do policies actually factor into consideration of a politician's worth? And I'm not talking about your half-baked extrapolations and woeful assertions.

Personal attacks, vehement criticisms of anything remotely progressive, strict adherence to partisan lies and half-truths...

I cannot wait for the day when people like you turn around and say 'it was all satire!'

Sickening.

I feel the same, although it seems there are a lot of intelligent and sane people as well. You just see and hear them less because they don't make such a big scene.

#877585 Welcome to IP.Board 3.2

Posted by Phil on 25 February 2012 - 08:34 PM

I did some experimenting with the YouTube player, but it doesn't seem easily possible to make it very customizable. What I've achieved so far is that you can add a #widthxheight parameter to the long YouTube URL and sometimes this works to make it the size you want. Sometimes it also just fails outright.

#865456 New Board Features Enabled

Posted by Phil on 02 November 2011 - 03:07 PM

When adjusting some settings in the board control panel, I noticed that there were a handful of features we had simply never enabled. Seeing as we don't have a policy of intentionally limiting features for our users like other boards do, I've decided to enable them. I've also reviewed most of the user group settings to make sure they all match up. Some of the things that you can now do include:

Facebook and Twitter login

You can now log in using your Facebook or Twitter account if you wish. To enable this, simply go to Your Settings -> Profile -> Manage Facebook Connect / Manage Twitter Connect. You will have to authorize our application so it can establish the necessary link between your social network profile and your forum profile here. Once that's done, you have some extra settings you can play with, such as updating your forum status with your Facebook status or importing your profile picture.

Note for the privacy-concerned: This is 100% voluntary. If you're not comfortable linking accounts, simply don't enable it and nobody will ever be able to make a connection.

Private Messages

Many user groups weren't able to use the new PM invitation feature that allowed the handy group conversations (think of it as a private forum topic), a core improvement of IPB 3. From now on, users of all groups can issue up to 50 invitations per conversation.

The maximum number of storable messages has also been greatly increased (100 for New Members, 500 for Posting Members and Project Team, 1000 for Hosted). That should make sure you never run out of message space Posted Image

Reputation

You might have noticed the Posted Image and Posted Image icons at the bottom right of every post. Those allow you to give reputation points, which will then reflect in the other user's profile. Give a plus if you thought the post was constructive/helpful/funny and a minus if it was bad (duh). New Members are not able to give any reputation points, Posting Members are only able to give 5 positive reputation points a day and all others simply have some other limits on the amount of points they can issue per day.

#864400 Update: Fixing Server Move Issues

Posted by Phil on 23 October 2011 - 06:59 PM

With all major accounts already moved to Dobby (that's the name of our new server, if you haven't heard yet) and the transfer of project sites in progress, I need to point out a few issues that may arise once an account has been transferred. This is obviously directed at people with accounts, but if you happen to be a visitor and find any of those issues unresolved, feel free to point it out to the site's webmaster.

1. Including remote files in PHP

Many sites still use the insecure and deprecated include() or include_once() function to include remote files with PHP, mainly for MasterNews. Because this is such a big risk, it is not enabled on Dobby and will silently fail, writing a message to your error_log. To avoid this, use PHP's readfile() function, which also prints the HTML it receives, but does not execute PHP code.

In other words, change:
<?php include("http://www.revora.net/masternews3/news/12345.php"); ?>
to:
<?php readfile("http://www.revora.net/masternews3/news/12345.php"); ?>

2. Missing FTP sub-accounts

If your account had custom FTP accounts set up (those you create with cPanel) or your account is a sub-account in the first place, you will not be able to use it for a while. For reasons that are beyond my understanding, the accounts are not properly set up on Dobby by the restore script. You can of course create new accounts, but there is no way to recover the passwords if you don't have them stored in your brain or on your computer.

However, once the move of all accounts is complete, we can simply synchronise over all the FTP account configuration files from Nagini and restore them with their old passwords. In other words, just chill and we'll sort it out.

3. Missing cron jobs

If you had cron jobs set up for your account (I doubt many people have), then apparently those are not transferred either. You will simply have to recreate them on Dobby.

4. SVN access

If you have a subversion repository, it might be that you connect through a URL that points to the wrong server, because SVN still resides on Nagini. I.e. if you connect with svn://myproject.cncguild.net/myrepo/ and your site has already been moved, you will not be able to access it. You can either wait until we move the SVN server as well, or use svn.revora.net as the host in your URL, as that always points to the server we run SVN off.

To update this URL in your working copy you can either use your favourite SVN GUI or this command-line command:
svn switch --relocate svn://myproject.cncguild.net/myrepo/ svn://svn.revora.net/myrepo/

More issues and solutions will be added to this post as they are discovered. Please don't hesitate to report issues yourself if you find anything instead of waiting for us to find out ;)
